Please Help, 1 disc taking days to burn!

Post by billybob2468 »

I know that I'm resizing/converting the files, multiplexing, generating menus and all that stuff, but my dvds are taking literally days to burn, and that just doesn't seem right. They used to take maybe an hour or two, but now they're taking days! I have a pretty decent setup:
Pentium D 820 (dual-2.8ghz)
1 gb ram
geforce 6800 gs
16x dvd burner
and I just don't think it should be taking this long.
Any ideas are welcome and appreciated!
Thanks in advance for any help!

My car no longer drives fast. Why?

There could be any number of reasons, but you have given us absolutely no information, apart from computer specs, on which we could possibly base an answer.

What are the properties of the files used? What editing was done? What is your precise workflow? Do you, for instance, after editing, go to Share > Create Video File > DVD (as we recommend) or do you jump straight to Share > Create Disc? What kind of menus do you construct?

And that may be just for starters!!

As mentioned by Ken the critical item here is the source file.
The nature of your problem tends to suggest you are working with either
MPEG4 DivX or Xvid - these formats popularly used on the internet by
TV companies have small file sizes though retaining high quality.

If you are using such a format they do tend to take hours to convert.
The process can be made considerably quicker by converting the source files before editing to a less compressed format normally MPEG2.

This is one of those exceptions to the rule regarding rendering a video once. A search of Google or a similar search engine will yield a number of conversion programs that are available.

Sorry, but they're just mpeg 2s, and the only editing I did was cut off the little beginning and end after capturing the tapes. I did just to share>create disc, and I do understand that it will take a while, but I just don't think it should take days. Thanks again!

Sorry, but I'm really just to lazy to render the new mpegs, as I have to create multiple discs with multiple mpegs on each!

Man, now I'm getting an unspecified error (5:0:0) right when it starts to actually burn! Ah well, its never worked before, why should it work now :D

Guess I'll try re-rendering and burning through the Vista burner. Thanks for your help though!

Are you using VS8SE] ? According to your first post about having burner problems, that is the version you specified. If so, then don't expect such an old version, to work on Vista.

SE's are Simple Editions, that are bundled with hardware or found in magazines, and may have been tweaked by the hardware manufacturer to work with their hardware. VS8 did have several bugs, and Ulead has some patches out for it, however they will install to Full versions only.

If they are not DVD Compliant then VS will have to recode the entire video. MPEG2 and DVD Compliant MPEG2 can be totally different. VS must see that the video clips meet the DVD standards. Do you have Smart Render enabled? Are you creating a video file first (Share>Create Video File), or going straight to the burn module (Share>Create Disc) with your project in the timeline? It is recommended that you render your video file, then start a new project, and then go to the burn module with an empty timeline to burn your disc.

Even though you have a healthy PC, still it may be best to shutdown unnecessary background applications.

Finally since it appears that you are running Vista
Guess I'll try re-rendering and burning through the Vista burner. Thanks for your help though!
you should entertain upgrading to VS11+, as it is Vista compatible.

And I captured the videos through the ADSTech capture software, which is software that captures in DVD Compliant Mpeg2s, if that helps. Thanks again!

And I do have smart render enabled, and at first I was just going straight to the disc, which I do understand means the files have to be encoded to VOBs, but I just don't get why it should take days. Again, Thank You.

If you go from the Timeline to the Create Disc module, the entire video will be re-encoded.

Try a small test.

1) make a dvd-compliant capture using the ADS Tech device
2) go directly to the Create Disc Module (without anything from the VS Timeline)
3) add a couple of your dvd-compliant mpeg captures
4) turn off motion menus, and transitions -- and make sure "Do not convert compliant mpeg files" is selected
5) burn to DVD Folders (not to disc)

See if process flow goes any quicker. Then start adding different steps to see where the bottleneck occurs...

George
