Avi to MPEG2 compliant converter?

Post by Yashirotcm »

Hey guys!

Could you recommend a good Avi to MPEG2 compliant converter?, I find MF6 to be slow at it (Takes about 6 hours to convert 2 hours avi file on my P4 3.0 ghz, 1GB RAM comp), So i'd like to try my luck converting the videos first and then check the no convertion of compliant files.

thanks!

What are the properties of the .avi file :?:

Heavily compressed codecs such as DivX and xVid .avi's can be problematic, and/or take a long time to re-encode.

I agree. Some formats are just difficult to convert. Sometimes you are lucky if you can convert them at all!

On the other hand, if you are using AVI/DV files from a MiniDV camcorder (13GB per hour) it shouldn't be taking this long.

If you are playing around with highly compressed files downloaded from the Internet, you will be spending lots of time converting files, and maybe lots of time trying out different converters every time you run across a slightly different format.

I've used SUPER (FREE!!!) a couple of times to convert a "problem" file. I don't remember it being particularly slow with those particular files, but at least one person here has complained that SUPER is too slow.

I also remember that (at least one time) Movie Factory didn't agree that the files were DVD compatible and it re-coded them again. (I may have had a setting wrong... I'm not sure.) But, that didn't take an excessive amount of time, and I was just happy to get it onto a DVD. The real downside to re-coding an MPEG is the additional (lossy) encode step. But again, I was just happy to find a way to use the "problem files".

You can search the Net for "AVI to MPEG", and you will find lots of software. Most will offer trial-versions.
