Studio 10 DVD audio sync problem when burned to dvd

Post by hotbreath »

Hi guys,

I know there have been loads of posts about audio sync problems which i have read but i'm still a bit puzzled as to how to solve this problem of mine.

I have been using Studio 10 to make music videos and have no complaints at all and am totally impressed at its features and ease of use. I have been importing clips via usb from a dv camera, dvds and a dazzle vhs capture device, editing them and then overlaying an audio track. the clips all play great and in sync in the timelines and when you watch them in the project view but when i go to burn them using the create disc option, the audio on the dvd starts to go out of sync at about 2:30. Obviously music videos need to rely heavily on the video and audio synching perfectly. I really like using ulead and would like to solve this problem if possible.

my computer is a dual core 1.8 ghz with 1 gb ram

any suggestions?

Number one, why are you capturing from a dv camera and DVDs with a Dazzle capture device?

When using a dv camera you should connect it via firewire cable to a firewire port on your pc. Don't have a firewire port? They're cheap (about $50) and are easy to install. DVDs should be inserted into your pc, then you use the Capture>Import from DVD function of VS.

Number two, you tell us nothing about your clips or project properties. Right click on a clip (one from each source) and post the properties here. Also, go to File>Project Properties and post them here.

Number three, what is your workflow? Are you using the Suggested Workflow of creating an MPEG-2 file before burning?

The more detail you can give the more answers we can provide.

It sounds like you are mixing & matching MPEG-2 clips and DV clips. You will probably be better-off saving all of your clips as AVI/DV, and doing all of your edits in that format. These problems rarely happen to people who work exclusively with DV files. (Less compression = less problems).

Of course, this process will result in some quality loss due to the 2nd MPEG encode, but when you are combining MPEGs you are likely to need a 2nd encode anyway.

If the individual clips go out-of-sync when they are converted to DV, you can try using VideoReDo or Womble to "repair" the MPEG before converting it. (There are 30-day free trial versions of both programs.)

If you are doing lots of MPEG editing, consider getting a special-purpose MPEG editor such as Womble. (All of my "weird" MPEG problems went away when I started editing them with Womble.)

Sorry if my earlier post was unclear, i am only using the dazzle capture device to capture clips from vhs tapes. i get the dvd clips straight off the discs and the dv clips via usb streaming from the camera. as for the properties of the project and the clips, i have not changed any of them from whatever the video studio defaults are. Sorry i'm not to savvy with all the tech jargon and different files formats, etc. I just want to try and get my audio and video synced as simply as possible. Any help would be appreciated.

I suspect you have all your mixed video clips in the timeline, and when you have finished whatever editing you do, you go straight to Share > Create Disc... Can you confirm this or otherwise, please?

Instead, try going to Share > Create Video File > DVD. This will create a single DVD-compatible mpeg-2 of your whole project. Normally, SmartRender is set by default. This means that any mpeg-2 already in the project will not be rendered if it has the same properties as the final format you used... But anything which is different, either in its properties or even its format, will be rendered fully. And it is here that the out of sync might be arising if the conversion takes place as part of the burn process (Share > Create Disc.)

You could first try this method with SmartRender left enabled. But if it goes out of sync, disable SmartRender. This means the conversion may take considerably longer. But there is a good chance there will be no out of sync problem. It also means that you get to test the new file before wasting another blank DVD...
