Welcome to the forums,

With MSP 8, you need to first overlap your clips. The transition will be created with the overlapping. Now drag your desired transition effect to this "overlapped" area.

I think MSP8 has cross-fade set by default. You can alter this in the Preferences dialog (press F6). I know with MSP7 the transitions had to be placed in the FX track ( I think :?: , it's been awhile since I've looked at MSP7).

First a transition is an effect to move from one clip to the next, so unless you have more then one clip, you can not use a transition. I take it you do not want to cut your clip correct? If not you can get creative, by using an overlay track. If you do not want to cut your single clip, then try this:

For this example we will say the video clip is on V1.
  • Drag 2 Color Clips onto V2, set their duration to whatever time you desire, and keep in mind that transitions use part of each adjacent clips time.
  • Right click on the color clips (preferably White or Black) and select Overlay Options. Set the transparency to 100% on the first & last Keyframes.
  • Now drag the right color clip so that it overlaps the left color clip the duration that you want for your transition.
  • Now you can drag and drop a different transition onto this "created" one.
  • Press Play and view your transition.
Now you can also play with the above, by changing the transparency of the color clips at various times, using different colors of color clips etc...

Hope that's what your looking for and helps..;)

Very good Vidoman. I had come to something similar, but I have learned a lot with your simple but far reaching technique. Thanks.
