mkv to mpeg-ii imported file 5x in size?

Post by kurt »

I have an mkv file that won't import directly into MovieFactory, so I used "SUPER" to encode it as mpeg-ii. The encoding increased the filesize slightly (from 350 MB to 440 MB), but the import of the mpeg-ii into MF shows over 2 GB of disc required to burn!?

The orginal mkv has a bitrate of 901 kps, which I increased slightly (to 1152 kps) for the encoding to mpeg-ii.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Yes. File size is determined by bitrate and playing time*. Movie Factory is re-coding the MPEG to a higher bitrate.

If SUPER created a DVD-compatible MPEG-2 file you can check the box that says Do Not Convert Compliant MPEGs, and the file should remain 440 MB.

If Movie Factory does not agree that the MPEG file is DVD-compliant, it will use your Project Settings and re-code the MPEG. (1152 is very low for a DVD.)

* kbps (kilobits per second) can be directly scaled-up to Gigabytes per hour.

I had "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" checked, but MF must not have considered the file compliant. I had the MPEG setting at HQ (7000 kps). When I changed that to SP, it modified the bitrate to 2500 kps, and now importing the mpeg-ii file show a much smaller project (around 1 GB).

Thanks!!!
