Can't save to a browsed folder PI 10 on Win2k

I am using P10 on Windows 2000 Pro SP4 having used P1 7?,8,9 happily for some years.

Since upgrading to P10 on one of my two computers, I can't save to a folder to which I have browsed, using the browse button on the save as window.

I browse to the folder I require, press save, and all seems well but in fact the file has been saved to
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\
and keeps being saved to that folder no matter how many times I browse to another required folder, UNLESS, I type the path of the folder I want to save to.

This is NOT the more serious "can't save as" problem in P11 which can be found at several places on the forums.

I had a look trhough the registry in the attempt to find a folder specification of the temp folder related to PI but found nothing relevant. It seems rather that the information from the folder browsing operation is not getting through to PI and so it is defaulting to the temp folder.

I attempted to write to support about this problem last friday but I did not get a confirmation email and I am not sure that my support request has reached them at all. Is there some way I can tell?

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
I am attempting to save files to C my hard drive. Often I opened the files from a SD or compact flash card connected via USB, but I think that the problem occurs whatever the source of the files.
