Here's one that I recently stumbled across on YouTube. It explains the basics.

Put your background scene in the time line. Add the green screen person in the video overlay. Highlight the video overlay and select Attributes, and then click on Mask and Chroma Key, then select the green that you want to disappear and play with the settings to see how your subjects appear to you on video.

just wanted to add to Joes advice that it appears your concept of green screen is not quite right - you do not add a background to the green screen video, you lay the green screen over a background and chroma-keying allows you to see through the green and see the background.
As I said above "does the top picture on theis webpage help :-

-Joe, thanks for this - when I insert my video clip and click on attributes I am unable to see any options that allow me to change the chromakey? I must be missing a step?

Put the background in the top track of the timeline - then put your model with the green screen background in the overlay track - then select the clip in the overlay track - and in the dialogue box above the right end of the timeline click on the 'Attributes' tab - (if there is an icon labelled 'Mask & Chroma key options - click on it) then when the box changes (or if it is already there) put a tick in the 'apply overlay options ' box
Please look carefully at that top picture on the webpage I directed you to.
