Hi,
After owning DVD MovieFactory 5 Plus for 4 days the bin is looking very attractive for a new home for it.
I cannot load any VOB files into the software, I get an error saying that the file is not accesible. So, I changed the extesion to mpg and now the video clips load in but the whole video is finished in minutes (actual length is 30) and only shows the first 3-4 minutes of the video the rest has disappeared.
Help
Please help a novice...
Are you using the DVD-Import function?
If your DVD is from a DVD-camcorder or a stand-alone recorder, make sure the disc is "finalized" or "closed".
If you are trying to import a commercial DVD, it's copy-protected.
Or, Movie Factory does seem to have trouble importing some DVDs for unknown reasons...

I am slightly confused as the first time I loaded the software on I was opening ...5 Launcher and then tried to load the software again and an icon called ...moviefactory 5 appeared. I now use the latter but when I click the Start Project button and then Add Video Files in the top left corner it opens up a explorer window and only shows the VOB files and then when I click them I get the error message. The earlier programme actually read the disk and loaded the video in, are they 2 different programmes?
My camcorder is a Sony Handycam DVD r404, all my videos are homemade ones, no commercial.

After you finalize the mini-dvd in the camcorder put it into your dvd reader.
In MF5_Plus use the Import DVD/DVD-VR funcion (the icon at the top of the window, last one on the right).
The instructions on how to import are in the MF pdf manual. You can either select the dvd drive that the dvd's in or browse and highlight the VIDEO_TS folder. After you click on import then a list of the videos will be displayed, put a check in the boxes of the videos you want to import and click import or OK.
Also make sure to download the latest updates to MF5_Plus if there are any and install any patches. Right now I can't check, the ulead website is very slow.
Renaming vob's to mpeg's doesn't always work (as you can see). the mpeg2 videos files are in the VOB container and need to be extracted. VOB's are container files and can hold more than one mpeg2 video file. So your only seeing the first video in the VOB container (even though there are more videos). If there was only one mpeg2 file in the VOB container then renaming the vob to mpg usually works because it's the only mpeg2 file in the vob container anyway.

How do you know what exactly the contents of your VOB file are? DVD's have a strange structure and where exactly the DVD player will find the things to play next are found in the IFO files which, together with the BUB files maketh your DVD
Please explain, in as much detail as possible, where your VOB came from and what the file structure of the original Video_TS folder on the DVD is.

The Video_TS folder has the following items:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
I have 34 chapters and it is 30mins long in total.
I have done as above and now it loads in ok but I cannot make chapters past 2min 40secs, as many as I like up to that time but after that the video goes to the beginning when the jog bar is moved beyond that point.

Dozno9,
More questions:
What operating system are your using? XP with SP2?
What type of mini-dvd did you record on, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw.
Do you know what Mode your recorded in?
The disk is finalized, yes? Or, the disk doesn't need to be finalized (dvd+rw)
It sounds like your mpeg2 file is corrupt, also could be you don't have SP2 installed or the correct win2000 update, not sure.
As a test put the mini-dvd into your dvd reader and copy the complete VIDEO_TS folder (along with it's files) to your local harddisk. Then when you import click on "Import DVD folder" and naviagate to the VIDEO_TS folder on your harddisk. See if your mpeg2 files still have a problem.

I am running XP SP2.
I am using DVD-RW.
I don't know what a mode is? Sorry, is that how it's recorded?
The disk is finalised.
I have copied the files to my pc and the same things happen.
It seems to be ok when I convert to avi, although I have only tried free trials and they only convert 5mins, what would be the best way to go?
I have tried Womble and that seems to be fine aswell, although I don't know how simple it is to use for what I want. I only want simple dvd's of my family with menus and some slight effects.

Are you importing the dvd by highlighting the VIDEO_TS folder?I have copied the files to my pc and the same things happen.
Or, are you renaming the VOB files to mpg and then inserting them into the timeline.
You should be importing the DVD using MF import from DVD feature.
This will extract the mpeg2 video files from the VOB's correctly.
Renaming VOB to MPG doesn't always work. If you are renaming the VOB's to Mpg then it's not the correct method. You need to import the dvd using the import dvd/dvd-vr disk feature.
