Low quality of DVD video

In your version of MF under "Preferences" do you have "BEST" for video re-sampling and encoding or the default of Good.
Under the project settings what did you use for the amount of compression ?
I would think 2 pass encode you would want 100%.
The amount of compression is the amount of motion depth search.

Doesn't look like a good encode, looks similar to if I'd selected 20% compression instead of 100%.

What version of MF are you using anyway?
I agree that it looks like very heavy compression even if it is not.

I have MF 6 and "Best" under Preferences. I rendered the clip in the example with 8000 kbps! (tried both constant and variable (two pass) bit rate, same result).

That's why I am so surprised. I thought at first that I messed up with the settings somehow, but now I think that the compression engine of MF is not so good (compared to Adobe's for example). Unfortunately. Because the Adobe's products cost sooooo/too much. :-/

There's something wrong. Even at 70% compression level the subject has very little movement. Could be the DV file was captured by other software, can't remember if you posted whether captured the file using MF6 or not. Adobe did have some different things to it's captures where extra information is stored in the DV file.

Curious if you edited any configuration files or have other ulead software installed. There is a patch for MF6+ but I don't think the patch fixes the encoder, had something to do with avchd disks and the pal format.

Thank you for the help, etech6355. I used MSP to capture the footage from a Sony DV cam. I edited it in MSP and rendered back to PAL DV. The rendered file itself doesn't have this defect. The problem starts when I convert it to DVD.

I must also say that Adobe also have this problem but it is not that obvious. I wouldn't probably even notice it if I didn't compare the results (see the link some posts above) with the MF in 200% magnification.
