I'm new at this; I've never used any video editor before, but I want something that will let me capture videos from my VCR, sort them and write them to DVD. My PC has Windows XP Media Centre Edition, with 1GB RAM, and as far as I can tell, it meets all the requirements for the program. I worked down the list of "required drivers" to install for the download version, and I think I got them all okay.
I downloaded and ran the trial version of 11+. Seemed okay. I captured a couple of bits of video, and used the editor to trim off some unwanted parts of one of them. I had to keep stopping and starting the program - I couldn't see any other way of switching between Editor and Movie Wizard, or changing the setting of the 16:9 box.
Then on one attempt at starting, the program hung up, and crashed my whole system. Couldn't activate the Task Manager or anything else, and had to switch off the PC to get out of it. Nex time up, VS11+ just wouldn't start. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it twice, but it still won't start. When I double-click the icon, I get an hourglass symbol for a couple of seconds, that's all.
So is there some easy fix that I can use? Or should I just start looking for some other software? I'm willing to pay money for a package, but only if I'm confident it works. (Edit - that is, works for me with my limited skill.)

will take you to a short tutorial, explaining how to find and complete that information. This way it will always be available, and will save you from retyping it in the future.
To change aspect ratio you can do so by checking the box located on the opening splash screen or, go to File>Project Properties, click on Edit and then the General tab. At the bottom is a drop-down menu for Display Aspect Ratio.

That is correct behavior of the program. The Movie Wizard provides a quick easy way of creating a video, ending in the video editor. You can also to to the Tools Menu and access the Movie Wizard from there.I had to keep stopping and starting the program - I couldn't see any other way of switching between Editor and Movie Wizard

Just switching off a PC by cutting the power to it is a sure fire way to get the whole system corrupted and should only be a last resort. Sometimes the system seems to hang but will come good again if you give it time. Too late for that in your case I'm afraid.
Maybe a complete and utter uninstall of VS, removing all traces of it in the registry as well, might get you going again. There are some instructions on how to do this here http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 5773#55773
