MP4 video file support?

Post by garygilbert »

I have a new camcorder that creates MP4 files (Sony).
My old Ulead product will not import this format.

Does Video Studio Support this video format for import?
I'd like to continue to use my ULead software, and will happily upgrade or purchase a new package if it does.

Thanks!

Videostudio V8 with the MPEG4 plugin (see this page) will handle that.

That sounds great! Thanks.
I will note that there some "other products" on the market that claim
MPEG 4 capabilities, but when I download their trials, it won't support the format of my file, or when it exports to the SVCD, VCD, or DVD formats from my file, it is a blank rendering.

Specifically, I have a Sony DSC-M1 camcorder that creates MP4 video files, and I have nothing that works with them appropriately.

I'm afraid of spending $99 + another $30 for the plug-in, and then not being able to work with it. (It's a lot of moeny for me - I'm going to have to work a whole day in order to afford this :? .

Is there a trial of the MPEG4 plug-in?
I downloaded the trial of the Vis Studio 8, and of course it won't work with the MP4 video file. So if there was a trial of the plug-in for verification, that would be AWESOME!

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, there is no trial of the two modules (MPEG-4 and AC-3). But apart from one or two people reporting initial problems in installing the MPEG-4 module, these problems appear to have been overcome or at least were not repeated on this forum. And as I say, there were only one or two people complaining. I personally have not bought the module so can't comment on any personal experience. I do recall, though, that some people who were after the module reported good experiences...

I wonder if there is someone who has the plug-in would be able to take a sample movie I have and process it to see if it works ok for this file. That would seal up a U-Lead sale from me! :D

Anyone willing to try it out for me?
I'd be happy to email a move and see if it could be processed.
I'd have to figure out what I could do in return for the favor . . .

I'm in there with you Gary. I just bought that same camera, and am sturggling to capture video as well. I tried the VideoStudio8, Windows Movie Makre, and Pinnacle Studio 8, with no luck?? I just bought the Ulead Video Studio and waiting to receive in the mail. I also just bought the MPeg4 plug in. I'll let you know how I do, and please do the same.

Did it work ?, in my case I was able to read the MP4 file from within VS8 with the MPEG-4 plugin, before buying the plug-in it was impossible.

Nontheless now the movie is beeing played in FAST MOTION within VS8+MPEG-4, somebody knows what it is the problem ?, thanks

I've just bought a Mustek DV5000 (MPEG4 video recorder) which came bundled with VideoStudio6 SE and this handles the MPEG4 files OK.

So now I'm thinking of upgrading to VS8 so I can make DVDs - but would I also have to get the MPEG4 upgrade as well???

I'm very confused :?

Update: It seems I was mistaken. While version 6 allowed me to import the clips in MPEG4 format by dragging them to the timeline, the sound on the finished project breaks up with clicks and pops. Video seems OK though, but the program clearly isn't that happy with the files as it refuses to use them as a template and there may be rendering artefacts in the timeline. Not having any other media to try I didn't really know what to expect. :(

:D Rendez2k above tried the MPEG4 Sony file from my CyberShot and was able to process the file to a DV output file with sound and all!
So yes - the MPEG4 plug-in seems to work. (And thanks to rendez2k for taking the time to check that!)

My Sony camera came with software that will export to DV AVI format so I can use it. I just didn't want to have to literally go through each file and export.
I would like to be able to place or convert all files "en masse" and have them set up right. Or, lace them on the timeline and have ULead VS9 do it's thing without having to manually handle each file.

I don't know enough about VS9 to say whether it can do that.
But it does work (import and export) to the MPEG4 format I originally inquired about.

Just another data point for ya'. I've been using an Olympus C-770 for almost a year as well as VideoStudio 8 and the MPEG-4 Plug-in. I have been quite satisfied with the combination. I've been able to produce several hours of videos; most of it family stuff, but I've also put together an instructional video for my Karate Instructor.

I was a little bit mad because the first advertisements for VS 8 said that it supported MPEG-4, so I bought the program. What was not said was that in order to support MPEG-4 you had to buy a plug-in. I feel I was taken for the $30 but in the end it was still a decent deal. I'm now thinking of upgrading to VS 9 but I'm going to first make sure the plug-in I have will work so I don't have to buy another plug-in for VS 9.

The MPEG4 plugin is in fact different, and cannot be used with UVS 9. The UVS 9-compatible MPEG4 plugin isn't even available from Ulead yet.

The MP4 plug-in is available (I purchased it Wednesday, after prurchasing VS9 Tuesday) and works great:

I'm able to:
- drop my .MP4 files directly on the timeline (from my Sanyo XACTI C4),
- trim the video clips as needed and use the "Save Trimmed Clip" function, which saves the trimmed portion into the VS work directory as an MP4 file with the same params as the source
- export my project as an .MP4 video file, with whatever parameters I want

So, as far as I know after two days of use, VS9 + the MP4 plug-in perform as advertised and so far I'm happy with my purchase (for which I took a gamble given the lack of feedback for VS9+MP4 on this forum).

Hope this helps,

I really appreciate the feedback! Thanks for the info.
That "gamble" aspect is the thing that bugged me.
I downloaded the VS8 tryout, and it wouldn't work
with my MP4s, so i was hoping for a MPEG4 tryout, but no luck.

I don't have the $ to take a chance on this software,
so this forum is actually quite a nice resouce.
Thanks to you and to others who have helped!
