I'm new to DVD-burning and movie handling, so please forgive me if I've missed something that's obvious to you.
I am trying to transfer movies from DVD-RAM (recorded on a Panasonic DMR-E50 stand-alone unit) to DVD-R using Movie Factory Suite 3.5. I can import the movies from DVD-RAM, but playback in the Create Video screen is jerky. All the frames are there, but the software playback doesn't seem to be able to keep up.
I thought this may be something to do with Panasonic's extra long-play recording mode that puts 6 hours on a 4.7G DVD. But then I found a short movie file installed with another software that I have, that was provided in both MPG and AVI. The MPG playback jerks in Movie Factory but the AVI playback is smooth as silk.
My hardware should be good enough - 3 GHz Pentium4 with hyperthreading, 1024 Mb RAM, 160 G disk, Radeon 9800 Pro graphics. But I am using Win98SE (I have a good reason for not upgrading!) which I suppose might not be the best, although Ulead do say that Win98 should be OK.
Has anyone else seen the same sort of problem, and more importantly does anyone know how to fix it?

> 3 GHz Pentium4 with hyperthreading
For your information your machine CANNOT use HyperThreading running
Windows98se. Windows XP uses the hyperthreading.
How does a video recorded on the panasonic unit in standard mode
playback on the computer?
Sounds more like a codec problem or your harddrive isn't running with
DMA enabled.

The Preview Screen
Hi,
The Preview screen isn't always smooth. I'd say try a small test -- create a project, and burn the DVD Folders to your hard drive. Then playback the DVD from your hard drive using something like PowerDVD. Or if you have the full version of DMF DC, it should have come with the Ulead DVD Player -- which will also playback a DVD from DVD Folders on your hard drive.
This will give you a better idea of how well the DVD will play.

Re: jerky playback
Thanks for trying, guys.
Solved it myself over the Christmas weekend, with a lot of trial and error. Seems as though full hardware acceleration for DirectSound audio was screwing things up, including giving garbled playback of WAV files in Windows Media Player. (I hadn't noticed that because I hadn't played any sound files through WMP for a while). reducing hardware acceleration solved the problem.
