Lost vid file when capture page whited out

Post by wguru »

Issue: Seemingly I began to lose my on-going MF4 capture (15+Gb) file precisely when I un-muted my Realtek AC97’s audio. Seems so because the MF4 capture video window immediately went blank with everything inside the window’s border being ‘whited out’. Oddly I was able to drag that window along the desktop (in search of a potential error popup) which revealed underneath the dragged window, a (separated?) MF4 window (essentially titled as my ‘add/edit menu’) and it also was blank/whited out (FYIO, that window might ‘normally’ be beneath the capture video window, don’t know and don’t really care).

Potential contributing factors relating to the cause of the issue/file loss:

One, this capture was the first I tried for a six hr VHS tape and largest file I ever tried making (maybe MF4 has a size limitation?) and while I captured the problem video, I ‘merely’ highlighted the file’s name and copied it for pasting into my list of captured .MPG files.

Two, while the ‘whited out’ windows were on the desktop, I checked the capture file’s folder and confirmed the file was there, and even noticed that it was indicated as having been modified (‘stopped capturing’) at the very moment I un-muted the capture’s audio.

So I clicked the capture window’s close button (the window’s white x/red box). Nothing happened to either of the two windows for a few moments, until a popup appeared (‘there was an unknown error’).

Neglecting to have denoted the message code (grrr), I click it’s OK button. A moment later both windows filled in. Noticing that the ‘stop capture’ button was ghosted, but since the project file was still in the window’s title block, I tried clicking it (the ‘stop’ button) and waited several minutes, maybe I didn’t wait long enough for the data to finished crunching, but the customary hour glass wasn’t appearing, so I then clicked the window’s close button which resulted in a popup prompting that ‘MF4 had to close and I might lose data, Yes/No’.

In that I again checked the file’s storage folder (finding the file now gone), I clicked ‘No’ (likely another and even more assuring the file loss).

Three, I recently installed Bluetooth software and prior to the MF4 capture, I’d merely removed the Bluetooth adapter (dongle) which resulted in ‘stopping the Bluetooth device’ (as evidenced by its ‘stopped icon’ displaying in my systems tray), but that never interfered with any other captures even when muting and un-muting, plus my ‘standby bluetooth’ hasn’t yet evidenced any other program issues.

Four (likely not even possible causes), I separately save/store my captured VHS’s mpeg file on my external HD and I save/store the project dmz file on my laptop (I pretty sure I’d never be careless enough to have tried moving any dmz file while the project was still being captured) and lastly, I’m assuming that my capture device source is correctly listed in my MF4 my capture source as ‘USB 2820 Video’ (actually ‘KWorld DVD Maker USB 2.0’).

May one assume it normal for MF4 installs to include a capture window that can’t be minimized or even dragged, normal that no hand appears when hovering on the “stop capture”, etc. icons, and that the stop capture icon(s) aren’t supposed to boldly color (like the start icon does), but it seems just about the time I experienced a file loss, the stop icon seemed ghosted, and assuming it is somewhat understandable that sometimes when I click on the stop capture icon (and while its still crunching the data), my cursor fails to morph into the usual hour glass, and understandable that capture window will sometimes be replaced by the ‘finish’ window (without the usual need to click the ‘add/edit menu’ menu’s OK button )????

So wahappened? I’m leaning towards it most likely being a result of the events following the initial snafu of my un-muting the audio and maybe if this continues, I’ll need to reinstall MF4 (most likely due to combined Bluetooth, Realtek AC97 and MF4 issues. If nobody ever figures it out, I won’t be surprised.
