Is it possible to change widescreen video to 4:3 without distorting it? It's OK with this video to crop the outer edges off.
Can this be done with "crop" filter? I tried this but could not figure how to make it 4:3 ratio.
Change widescreen video to 4:3
I happened to compile this answer just yesterday for a friend
To crop 16:9 to 4:3, you want to add your videos with stretch/display aspect mode to be ""Keep aspect ratio (no letterbox)".
For ANY aspect ratio changes in a project:
* go to Project Settings, change it to what you WANT the END RESULT to be (eg 4:3), so you can see what it will look like on the timeline. (when you render a video later, make sure the settings eg 4:3 match this!)
* Also ensure "non-square pixel rendering" is checked (this allows mspro to alter video for aspect ratios. Else the menu items below are grayed out.)
* before adding any videos to your project: go to Preferences, Edit tab, and change the "Default Stretch Mode" to what you want (this will apply to any videos added (later), rather than making you do it for EVERY video/clip! eg if you've already put scenes in your timeline, you're stuck, do the media-source option below umpteen million times)
o eg:
+ stretch (this zoom a 16:9 to 4:3, but may blow out aspect ratio, like on the tv doing 4:3 to 16:9 stretch mode)
+ keep aspect ratio (this would letter/pillar box)
+ keep aspect ratio (no letter box); this may zoom/crop 4:3 to 16:9, or vice versa...
o Help says:
+ Default stretch mode sets how you want your video to be displayed in the Preview Window.
Select Stretch to extend your video to fill out the entire frame without keeping the aspect ratio.
Keep aspect ratio (with letterbox) fits the entire video into the Preview Window while
Keep aspect ratio (no letterbox) keeps the video proportioned and crops the areas that exceeds the Preview Window.
o You may also need/want to set "default display aspect ratio" ... this is for unknown aspect clips only.
* If you've already added videos to your timeline, you must click to select them, then right-button submenu, "Media Source Options", and select the stretch modes above. Preferences changes above will NOT alter any clips already in your timeline. I always forget that...
PS this will make your project (eg set it to be 4:3) display the way you want... don't forget when you render your finished video from the timeline, eg a new MPG, to ensure that 4:3 aspect and non-square pixels are also checked , in the creat video compression format dialog box!
