Fix for Out of Sync Audio?

Post by Black Lab »

I found this article on another forum:
Do you experience loss of video/audio synchronization after editing MPEG-2 files from DVD-RAM (or other hardware MPEG) devices? A Ulead engineer gave me the following tip for MediaStudio Pro.

On my Windows XP computer:
1. I clicked START;
2. I clicked MY COMPUTER;
3. I clicked C: drive;
4. I clicked the DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS folder;
5. In the WINDOWS TOOLS menu, I clicked FOLDER OPTIONS;
6. I clicked the VIEW tab;
7. I ticked the option to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS;
8. I clicked OK;
9. I clicked the ALL USERS folder;
10. I clicked the APPLICATION DATA folder;
11. I clicked the ULEAD SYSTEMS folder;
12. I clicked the ULEAD MEDIASTUDIO PRO folder;
13. I clicked the 8.0 folder;
14. I clicked the MSP (configuration settings) file;
15. Under the [VIODRIVER] heading, I typed CloseAudioDTR=1;
16. I saved the change.

The same procedure should also work for VideoStudio 10 Plus, if you run into this issue. Instead of browsing to the MSP (configuration settings) file, browse to the UVS (configuration settings) file.

By adding this entry, I successfully edited the DVD camcorder MPEG files and exported them as a single, DVD-ready MPEG-2 file, which I burned to disc. Video/audio synchronization was perfect. This fix may help you if you experience similar problems with the editing of MPEG files created by DVD-RAM and other MPEG devices.

What I find interesting/frustrating is that if the fix is that easy why is it not included by default - especially as "a Ulead Engineer" suggested the fix.

Is there any downside when that line is included in the configuration file ?

mmhh...

Slightly slower rendering
Slightly larger output file
Problems when re-editing the MPG movie later
This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.

Those instructions were also a response from tech support from some who were experiencing audio sync problems with WMV files.
As posted by some it didn't always work in their case.
At least worth a try, I had forgotten that tip.

That fix was obtained by me... Jerry Jones... when I was working full-time as a Ulead consultant.

At that time (2003/2004), I noticed that when I edited MPEG-2 standard definition video files from the Panasonic VDR-M30 DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/DVD-R camcorder, that final renders from VideoStudio and MediaStudio Pro resulted in loss of audio/video synchronization.

I sent weekly summary reports to Ulead engineers in Taiwan and I kept on them about this issue until they finally came through -- after several weeks.

One of the engineers suggested that I add that line AND HIS SUGGESTION WORKED!

It forces a re-render of the audio.

I did not discover any downsides, but I would suggest that you use this tip only if you are experiencing such loss of video/audio synchronization when using Panasonic standard definition DVD camcorders.

This tip does *not* fix the classic frame-dropping that often takes place with analog-to-digital MPEG encoding devices that capture from sources with no timebase correction or frame synchronization.

There you have it.

Ahh yes Jerry, after expanding my window I do see jonesgroup.net at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the clarification, for Panasonic is not mentioned at all in the thread from which I stole this info.
