video/audio sync problem

Post by rspotter »

I'm having problems with the audio/video sync when I burn mpeg video tv capture to DVD. The delay is very slight. Is this normal?

I am using Ulead DVD MovieFactory version 4.04 SE that came bundled with the Hauppauge WinTV PVR card. When I playback straight from the mpeg file, there is no delay.

Did you edit the MPEG? (I have a Hauppauge card, and it only happens to me with edited MPEGs.)*
Is this normal?
Well... I hate to call it "normal", but it is a fairly common problem. ( See my signature / tagline below? ) If you use the forum's search feature to search for sync, you will find lots of discussion and suggestions.

My solution was to buy a special-purpose MPEG editor from Womble. If you just want to cut & splice (i.e cut-out commercials), VideoReDo makes a nice easy-to-use low-cost MPEG editor. (Both of these programs also have MPEG repair tools which have helped some Ulead users. The idea would be to "repair" the MPEG corruption before the actual problem shows-up... before it goes out-of-sync. I havn't tried the repair tools... But, I haven't needed them since I started editing with Womble.)

The following is just a hypothesis.... When the MPEG is re-coded and/or re-multiplexed for the final DVD, the corruption is probably actually getting "repaired". Imagine you have a video frame with some invalid data... If the bad frame gets thrown-out during re-coding, but the audio remains, you now have a sync problem. :(

* This doesn't happen to everyone, and it doesn't happen every time. Either the editing is corrupting the MPEG, or the MPEG is already corrupted and the editing makes it worse. :? We don't know which... :? Sometimes the "lip sync" problems can be severe, and sometimes the same underlying corruption can cause Movie Factory to give-up, lock-up or even crash!
