Ken,
I tried several analogue tapes and except for several seconds of capture, they then failed. A message box popped up advising "capture failed" this file is corrupted or unusable. It will be automatically deleted.
Might add that I could not preview the analogue tapes on VS11+ preview screen, but could see the scenes for the few seconds when capturing.
Tried several Hi-8 tapes and the captures went smoothly with no dropouts. I could also preview the tapes before I captured. I will now try a pass thru between my analogue camera and the Digital 8.
My reason for understanding that Hi-8 and Digital 8 are one and the same comes about from advice given me by a camera store employee. His advice was not to pay for Digital 8 when Hi-8 are the same thing and much cheaper. I know you can get 90 minutes in standard play on an analogue camera with Hi-8 and only 60 minutes with Hi-8 on the Digital 8 camera's.
This is due to Digital 8 camera's recording to the tape at a faster rate than analogue camera's.

Ken,
The pass thru from my Analogue camera to digital 8 camera failed in the same manner as mentioned in my previous posting. I expected this would happen, but I am a glutten for punishment. You may be right in that VS11+ is not recognising the Analogue tapes. They don't have a timecode on them. The capture information panel even indicates that there is no date on the tape.
This is a right carry on I must say. Have Corel got their hands on yet another great product and stuffed it up.
Pleased to say that a capture using my Panasonic GS400 went without a hitch.

All I recall from the distant 8mm/Hi8 days was that Hi8 came later and was a step up from standard analogue 8mm. The coating was different, and I thought there was something different about the signal with which the video was recorded too.
Anyway, it seems Hi8 tapes can be used interchangeably with Digital 8 tapes for digital recordings, but they don't recommend using standard analogue 8mm for digital recording...
I still suspect it is the signal embedded in a standard analogue 8mm tape that VS11 does not like for some reason...

Ken,
Sounds to me your analog tapes, when connected to the computer via firewire is almost the same as using a dv cam in passthrough mode except the source is the analog tape (with no timecode).
If the tape is analog then there's no timecode on the tape.I still suspect it is the signal embedded in a standard analogue 8mm tape that VS11 does not like for some reason...

Ken,
The Hi-8 tapes were all recorded on my Sony DCR-TRV330E Digital 8 camera. These are timecoded by the camera.
The Analogue tapes are from my Sharp VL-N1X. These are not timecoded and that is the problem. VS11 is obviously looking for a timecode and when it doesn't detect one, it chucks a wobbly.
I also have a Sony BMC-500P Beta camera (shoulder job) which I mess about with from time to time. I have in the past used pass thru from a Beta tape deck via my Digital 8 with no problems. I am not even going to bother trying these with VS11+. LOL.

Cannot Capture
I just "upgraded" from VS10 Plus to 11 and have a Sony HDR-HC3.
Cannot capture anymore. Gives me "Cannot Start the Capture Graph". Note that this is happening with 3 different PCs with 3 different IEEE Firewire Interfaces (and 3 different brands). Product is DEFECTIVE OUT OF THE BOX !!!! I can't believe that Corel would relase a DEAD product out of the box like that ! . Has anyone contacted Tech Support ?

Capture Problems
OK - I got it fixed. I am using HDR-HC3 and was getting the same error as everyone else. Here is the trick.
When installing VS11 - you MUST have your Camera plugged in. It will detect the correct settings. So in my case - I uninstalled VS10 and VS11 - restarted the PC - plugged my Sony Cam - then reinstalled VS11 - and all functions are now working correctly.
So nice of Corel/Ulead to tell us that in the installation. why not have something that says; STOP - plug your Camera in NOW before proceeding. Geez !
Hope this helps someone .

All I can say is, thank goodness I have VS10+ to fall back on. This is on my desktop machine runing Windows XP. I can capture Video 8, Hi-8 and Digital 8 tapes using my Sony DCR-TRV 330E till the cows come home. I can also pass thru as well if the mood strikes me.
It is my opinion that Corel have gone the cheap route and rather than provide the ULead Direct Show Capture Plug-In, along with the 5 others that were in previous versions, they have seen fit to foist upon us the obscure IVI Capture Component.
It would appear that Corel have got their hands on a great product and stuffed it indeed.

Received this reply from Ulead about the analog to digital pass-through issue.
Hi Ron, I think the cause of this "failure" is the new IVI(intervideo) capture plugin implemented in version 11; the previous versions have the older plugin which works well with pass through. I have already sent an email to HQ regarding this, and hopefully they'll do something about it.
Thanks!
P.S. if you have any other information, please send it to me so I can do a follow-up.

pkerbage,
I didn't come across your problem with my HC3 being recognized.
VS11+ captures nice from my HC3, when the tape end VS11+ also stops capturing and the end of the mpeg2 file isn't corrupted with blank frames. So this is a nice feature, you don't have to babysit the capture process.
Try writing back to tape using VS11+, mine isn't working, the video stumbles & pauses every few seconds writing to tape and that's exactly what's recorded to the tape when played back in the HC3.
OR, when writing to tape if you "Disable" SmartRender" VS11+ will create the TS file good enough to write back to tape and then it appears to work correctly. (Does take longer to create the file).
One of the templates I've also been using for the HC3 is "Share -> HDV->HDV 1080i (for pc). This will produce a PS (program stream) file.
The template "Share -> HDV->HDV 1080i (for computer) produces a Ulead TS (transport stream) file.
VS11+ seems to work nicely with my HC3 & all program stream hd-mpeg2 videos. But, the transport stream video part doesn't appear to work correctly, even if I import TS (transport stream) hd-mpeg2 files captured from other software VS11+ isn't reading the fielding information correctly. (If VS11+ creates the TS streaam file then VS11+ reads it correctly), but any videos captured using other software that just transfers the video from the tape to the harddisk (which is TS format) then VS11+ isn't reporting the fielding information correctly. That's why I call them ulead transport stream files.
You can convert your hd-mpeg2 videos to Dolby 2/0 or 5.1 in the Burning module by carrying the project file over into the burning module and changing the Project_Properties in the burning module to 1440x1080@25MBS CBR UFF with Dolby 2/0 or 5.1. I don't often do this though unless I have a customized audio track(s) because I can't natively use the video in VS on the timeline again. So it's a final file thing.

I have taken no steps forward and two steps back with standard video capture from a mini DV camera (not passthrough) with VS11+ on Vista (see earlier posts).
I uninstalled both VS11+ and MF6+, then spent 45 minutes removing around 500 Ulead entries from the Registry (I kid thee not) using regedit. Then I defragged and rebooted. I also uninstalled a couple of other editing programs that came with the computer (Roxio DVD Creator and Muvee). Reinstalled VS11+ but not MF6+.
Capture to DV format was atrociously jerky -- worse than it was on the previous install. And get this: WinDV which worked previously, now drops frames like crazy, which I have never seen it do before on two different computers running XP.
I am now officially tired and going to bed...

In another video editing application I use when capturing dv from an external passthrough device under preferences I disable DV control.
Then the capturing program simply waits and captures dv what I call dumb mode (sync & capture the stream).
But the new capturing method in VS11+ may be better than previous versions for the general user. At least for my capturing needs, the program captures no problem from my hauppauge PVR150 analog capture card and it does capture better then previous versions of VS from my standard & highdef cams.
Maybe they can add a switch to disable DV control and capture in dumb mode.
But for general capturing where the program does control the cam I like this new capture module.
