Have converted mpeg movies to an avi format which wont open

Post by oceanauk »

I have had to recode some mpeg movies into an avi format because I was having audio timing issues when using them in DVD MovieFactory 5. I was advised to try recapturing them in avi which I have done but now MovieFactory keeps giving me an error message saying the file is not accessable. Any ideas please? I used DivX to compress (I think that's right!) but I'm using the DVD MovieFactory on another computer with a faster processor than my laptop and DivX is not on there so would that have any bearing on the opening of the file? Hope this makes sense to somebody! LOL!

:? Not quite.... I'm having trouble following the sequence of events.... Did you capture in DivX the first time, and then "AVI" the second time? Or, did you use an AVI file with DivX compression for your 2nd try? :?

What are you converting from? DivX? Are you really re-coding them? With what software? Or, are you re-capturing them?

What type of compression are you using in your AVI file? AVI/DivX? AVI/DV? The less-compressed formats will generally cause the least trouble. AVI/DV at 13GB per hour almost always works. (MiniDV cameras record in DV format.)

What type of source are you capturing from?
I used DivX to compress (I think that's right!)
DivX causes lots of users trouble. Besides that, whenever you convert from one lossy compression scheme to another lossy compression scheme, you loose quality due to the 2nd lossy encode step.

It's best to do all of your editing in a less-compressed format like DV, and then compress once to the final format. If you are making a DivX file, compress to DivX once as the final step. If you are making a DVD, compress once to MPEG-2 as the final step before burning.

Mpeg to AVI query

Post by oceanauk »

I knew this was going to get complicated!!! LOL! OK I'll go back a bit - I've been trying to produce a wedding DVD for friends however I lost all my data on my computer and managed to recover all of the films whicha re in mpeg format orginally. However when I burned the DVD a couple of the movie clips had audio timing that was out ie when people were speaking the sound came after they'd spoken. I posted a query on this site and was advised to try and convert the problem clips into an avi format which I have done. I am using some free software called VideoConverter. When I used it i had an error message saying that I needed a DivX codec which I downloaded then converted the files. I then tried putting these converted avi files into the MovieFactory software but I cannot access them. So this is the point I'm at. It's all got very technical for me and I just want to correct two mpegs which have these audio timing errors. Hope this helps a bit more and there is something I can do!!! Many thanks for your response.
