First, I'll confess that I don't know if your card works directly with Movie Factory. However, I do know that you are almost always better-off using the capture software that comes with your hardware.

Once you have a digital video file on your hard drive, you can use Movie Factory, or any software of your choice for editing and DVD authoring/burning. I will pre-warn you that some of us have sometimes had trouble* editing MPEGs. (I have a Hauppauge PVR-250, which is an MPEG-only capture card.)

Some capture-hardware and capture-software just don't "play well together". My theory is that video capture drivers are not as standardized as more-common computer peripherals like printers. Microsoft has a standard for common peripherals. As long as the driver-writer and application writer-stick to the rules, everything works. For example, a programer can write a word-processing program that works with any standard windows printer. (In the old DOS-days, this was not the case.) The driver has to be written by the hardware manufacturer, since they are the only ones who know how to communicate directly with the hardware.

I don't know if Microsoft has a similar spec for video capture devices. If there is no standard, the hardware manufacturer has to write both the application and the driver, or they have to provide the application writer with the specific requirements and details necessary to make the hardware & software work together.

* I've frequently had "lip-sync" problems and even occasional crashing when working with edited MPEGs. This doesn't happen to everyone, and I've never had any trouble with unedited MPEGs or with files edited with a special-purpose MPEG editor.

The software that came with the HVR 1600 was DVD Movie Factory 5,
the weird thing is the capture drivers don't work with DVD Movie Factory 5 or 6, I contacted Hauppauge and was told "Currently ulead will not direct capture from the HVR-1600 you will need to record in wintv2000 then import the files into ulead".

Weird, yes. Unusual, no.

At least Hauppauge gave you a straight answer. 8) Hauppauge should really make it more clear in their documentation. And, they should warn you about potential MPEG editing problems too.

Apparently, Ulead will allow anyone to bundle the "free" SE versions with their hardware. Some of the SE versions may be tweaked to work with the hardware, or maybe that's just a myth... :?
