System crashes when trying to import DVD video

Post by ssorg »

Both DVD Moviefactory 6 Plus and VideoStudio 10&11 crash when I try to import DVD video from either the hard drive or the CD ROM.

I recieve that error message that says "Ulead VideoStudio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I never took the apology seriously though.

I need some assistance troubleshooting and fixing this because I just don't know where to start....

Thanks..

A corrupt MPEG file can sometimes crash the Ulead programs. (A "bad" video file will often play-back OK, so it can be hard to tell.)

Where did the DVD come from? If it came from a stand-alone DVD recorder or from a direct-to-DVD camera, make sure the DVD is "finalized" or "closed". (This is done from the recorder/camera.... But, I don't think using an unfinalized disc normally causes a crash.)

You could also try using VOB 2 MPG (Free!!!) to convert your DVD to an MPEG file. I've tried that program twice. Once it worked perfectly, and it was fast. The other time, it didn't do anything!

If you search the Net for "DVD to MPEG", you will find lots of programs. Most of them will re-code the MPEG, which will degrade the quality. However, if you have a corrupt MPEG, re-coding might be a good thing! I had some luck once using SUPER (Free!!!) to convert/re-code a "problem" VOB file to a usable MPEG.

Sometimes you can simply re-name the VOB files to .MPG. You might need to join the files together as one big MPEG file. The VideoReDo web site has some info on how to join VOB files.

VideoReDo and Womble both have tools that can sometimes repair a corrupt MPEG. (If that turns-out to be the problem...)

Hello DVD Doug:

So far I've tried DVD files from the the DVD drive, and DVD files that I've ripped and burned to the hard drive using various programs... all with the same effect. The DVD in the drive is a movie that I purchased.

Since both mediums cause a crash, I figured it was something else other than a corrupted file.

I open the program and choose new project, then opt to import DVD video from a disc or hard drive, then choose folder then a chapter and CRASH. The crash is always preceded by lots of HD activity beforehand.

What am I missing here other than another Windows program that JUST DOESN'T WORK RIGHT !

Any other ideas?

The DVD in the drive is a movie that I purchased.
In that case, it's probably copy-protected (encrypted).

We don't discuss circumvention of copy protection here on this forum. It's illegal in most countires. Here in the USA, the DMCA made it illegal to "crack" digital copy-protection, although it may be OK to bypass analog copy-protection in order to make a personal-use copy.

I wouldn't expect Movie Factory to crash if you try to import the DVD... I'd expect an error message or warning... But I've never actually tried it.

If you try to import a ripped-encrypted MPEG file, the program might behave like you've loaded a corrupt file. Of course the program shouldn't crash just because it hits a glitch in the MPEG structure, but sometimes it does.

In addition to what Doug has posted usually these ripping programs produce a dvd that is only playable and not editable.
You you can't eat it or edit the video.
