Any way to lock audio and video clips together?

Post by mrheckman »

I currently use VideoStudio 8 and just finished a project where I needed to insert a clip in the middle of the project after I'd already aligned a large number of short audio clips. When I inserted the new video clip, it pushed all of the old video clips back, but the audio clips did not move. I had to manually align the audio clips again. I could not find any way to "lock" the audio and video clips together.

I also downloaded the trial VideoStudio 11+, but did not find any way to do it there, either (interestingly, I could only try it with still images; when I inserted a MOV file the program immediately crashed, but that's another forum topic altogether). I searched the user manual and didn't find any reference to it, either.

I know that iMovie, for example, has this locking ability. Does VideoStudio? Does any equivalent Windows program?

(I apologize if this question has already been answered in the forum, but I searched for "lock" and related terms and could not find any appropriate thread.)

What you want is called RIPPLE EDITING.
I'm not sure if it is available with version 8 but know that it is available in version 9 and above.
Have a look in HELP for Ripple Editing. In versions 9 and 10 you enable/disable it selecting an 'icon' which appears next to the timeline.
Have a look here

Ripple editing was not available in VS8. You had to adjust things manually, I am afraid.

In VS11 (as in VS10) you will find the toggle to the immediate left of the top track in Timeline view. If you hover the mouse over it, the name will come up.

Ripple editing. What will they think of next?

Thanks, guys, for explaining about ripple editing, and I really like the link to the excellent example of how ripple editing works. The example depicts exactly what I want the program to do. Now, if I can just figure out how to get VS11+ to work with the MOV files, I'll buy it. (But first I'll search the forums to see if that question has already been answered!)
