Win DVD 4 Sound Problem

Hello,

1st post, I hope someone can help. I have made brief search of forum and not found an answer.

I have Win DVD 4 (OEM) installed on a Dell Inspiron Laptop (with integrated sound and video) which is running Windows XP (Service Pack 2). According to Device Manager, the audio is Sigma Tel C-Major Audio and audio codecs listed are: Intervideo MP3 Audio codec, Spiro Lab Telecom Audio Codec and Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec. Also listed is Windows Media Audio.

Graphics (onboard) is reported as: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. Video codecs listed are: DivX 6.1 Codec, Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec v1, TechSmith Screen Capture Codec and together with numerous .dll's (7).

DVD's will not play in Windows Media Player 10 (DVD's default to this and I can't figure out how to make them default to Win DVD)! I get an error message in Windows Media 10 that I need to lower screen resolution and the number of colours (but it still won't play when I do this though). Have installed codecs for Win Media Player 10 - still no joy.

DVD's used to play in Win DVD 4 - but now I get no sound. I made a codec the default codec in Media Player 10 and now a DVD will play ok in Win DVD but the sound is off. The speakers are on (I get a "click" noise when I open a new web page for instance) and in Windows Volume Control (loudspeaker icon in System Tray) nothing is muted. In Win DVD, the audio is not muted (button has no line through it).

2 Questions.

1) How do I stop DVD's defaulting to Windows Media Player and default to Win DVD instead?

2) How do I get the sound back so that when DVD's play through Win DVD they play through my laptop's speakers?

I hope I have provided all the necessary information. Laptop is now out of warranty with Dell, so they won't provide support for OEM product.
