The lack of documentation regarding field/frame information is stunning.
One such lack in VideoStudio 11 Plus that completely confuses me is the "HD DVD" output templates that Ulead has prepared for those who click...
SHARE > CREATE VIDEO FILE > HD DVD
Why is "lower field first" specified by Ulead for HD DVD????????
Is this an error?
Or is there a new paradigm for HD DVD that we need to learn?
In the past, most MPEG-2 devices have specified "upper field first."
MiniDV .avi video has always been "lower field first."
Now, Ulead is telling us that "HD DVD" is "lower field first."
I'd like to know if this is correct or a mistake or what.
Man, some better documentation about this topic would be really helpful.

As far as I can tell it is very confusing the way this HD-DVD output works.
At first I thought the same as your post "Why lower field"
But, it's NOT always "Lower Field First", depends.
It appears to me that you need to have the "Mpeg Optimizer" setting under "Preferences" checked ON, And your working with a HD video file on the timeline. The HD-HD-DVD setting will use the source videos properties to create a new HD-DVD video file. Provided you choose the correct frame size.
So after recording from a hd cam onto the harddisk, then editing or trimming the video(s) you can then choose this selection and it will match your source video properties.
If you import a HD-mpeg2 video file into the timeline when you export using the HD-HD-DVD then the properties will be the same as the source video.
So, Jerry, here is the catch, import a TS stream HD file that is true UFF.
Go to this same output setting you say is LFF and the fielding will now say Frame_Based. It's using the source videos properties to determine the fielding and other parameters IF if the source is already in the correct format.
But the TS conversion is still wrong, so what are you going to do with a avchd file that is really UFF and the program says it's frame_based.
BTW, the avchd file that was extracted to your harddisk ( the h264.m2t ) file is UFF. I can use it in other programs and they say it's UFF, and it converts to hd-mpeg2 and plays properly.
But, anyway the settings your referencing change, it won't always be LFF.
It is confusing, but for anyone with a hd cam that is tape based with work without any programs using the PS format (as long as the "Mpeg Optimizer" is checked ON under "Preferences").

Thanks.
I now understand how it is supposed to work.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work with AVCHD .M2T files here.
The "MPEG Optimizer" selection is greyed-out when an AVCHD .M2T file is inserted into the timeline here.

I've gone through the same as you, everything you just posted made me think about a new user and proper "WorkFlow".
The program seems to work with PS stream format well. I think there may be a glitch in the smartrender but that's hard to tell right now.
I know I can't write back to tape with VS11+ will smartrender ON.
VS11+ will write video to the tape but it's not correct, looks like a frame_rate of about 5 frames per second, again something again probably in the TS bug.
If I turn OFF the smartrender then it works but creating the TS stream format file with smartrender disabled takes a year and a day.
I wonder if they knew this when it was released and had to meet a deadline.......been there before.
