VS11+ gets strande when creating a dic

Post by gatiarf »

Using VS11+ on a PC with P4 3GHz, 2GB memory, 320GB HD, I get always stranded at the step right after menu creation, as shown on screenshot available at:

Did this happen to other people? What should be done?
Thanks,

Bruno

I am sorry, but the photo you posted, even at the highest magnification, is too small to be able to see any detail at all.

Can you describe in detail what you were doing, using video with what properties, when you have trouble.

Hi Ken, if you click on the link, then click on the photo, then click on the even smaller photo then you will get "the big picture!"
Looks like just the dialogue box and all he has to do is close it then proceed.
What frightens me is the array of icons at the bottom of the screen next to the Vista logo. Is that normal? I still have XP.

Hi Lancecar,

Please don't pay attention to the many icons - it's just a busy quick launch bar (shows on Vista exactly as on XP)!

Thanks,

Hi Ken,

What happens is that, when editing of my project is complete:
- I hit "share"
- then "create disc"
- then I create my menu
- then "next", and this is where I get stopped.

I never had this issue with VS10 on XP. I have a pretty extensive experience with VS 9 and 10. I acquired VS 11 to match Vista, but now, I don't know what to do. Actually, for the time being, I use Adobe Premiere Elements as a rescue, but I'd like to be able to go back to VS.

Thanks in advance,

Bruno

I cannot add anything because I still don't have any detailed idea of what the problem is. You say you build the menu, but then can't proceed? But what exactly do you do in building the menu? And on the screen in the picture you posted, what happens when you try to see a preview of the menu?

We certainly try to answer threads like this, but I am afraid I cannot offer any more without more information...

OK, Ken, thanks, I'll try to be more specific.

Normally, after building/editing the menu, when it is complete with scenes, thumbnails, lay out, titles etc, you hit "next" and then you get to a new window.
On this new window, you would select if you want to burn a DVD or just save an image (and in the latter case, you would select the file name and location). This used to work very well with VS9 and 10 using XP.

With VS11 on Vista (with the same PC, with 2GB of memory, and a 3 GHz P4), I can never get to this final window. VS11 gets stranded at this point, and I have no other solution than hitting ctrl/alt/del to open the application manager and close VS11.

Please let me know what I could do. Is this a bug of VS11? Or is this a problem that is specific to my own system?

Thank you very much in advance,

Bruno

Maybe you have too many things running in the background and it's causing VS to choke.

I notice that you say that after you finish editing, you go to Share > Create Disc. Instead of doing that, have you tried going first to Share > Create Video File > DVD to produce a DVD compatible mpeg-2.

Then you save your project, and go to File > New Project, which will clear the timeline. Leave the timeline empty, then select Share > Create Disc. When the burning module opens, insert your new mpeg-2. Make sure 'do not convert compliant mpeg files' is ticked in the Options cogwheel icon. Build your menus, and then try burning.

At the moment, I think you are in fact trying to burn your project file, which means the program has the heavy task of converting the project, building and converting the menus, multiplexing the audio and video and actually burning, all at the same time. If indeed you have a lot of programs running in the background, the computer may just not be able to do the job.

Anyway, give it a try and see if there is any difference.
