Second monitor set-up

Post by Sue Whitham »

I have VideoStudio 10 (not 10plus) and tech support say I can use a second monitor set-up. My preferences are set to Dual Head Device and my computer settings are OK, as I use my second monitor when editing with Serif Movieplus. I want to show the preview pane full screen on the second monitor, not simply replicate the primary monitor. Can anyone tell me how? If VS10 doesn't support this, does the new VideoStudio 11plus? I would upgrade if so. Would appreciate any help.

Hi,
You need to post what video card your using.
It's done making and adjusting settings usually in the advanced section of your video card and changing the settings in VS under "Preferences" to use "Dual Head Device". When "Dual Head Device" is selected in VS10 and your video card settings are correct this will work.

Nvidia & ATI cards can do this.

I have Nvidia G-force MX 4000 card. How do I adjust the settings to work with VS10? (And will this change the display I am using when I switch to editing in Serif Movieplus? Dual Head Device is selected in VS10 preferences

I have to go by memory (not at that machine).
In the NVidia setup page you usually have to activate the advanced features.
Usually the most common setup for Nvidia is "TwinView" so I would use "Twinview" other modes can cause the full screen video to span across both monitors.

What you are looking for is the term "Full Screen Video".
Usually the 2 options are "Disable" or "Automatic".
On my Nvidia advanced setup there is a page listing on the left side of the interface screen. Looking down that page there should be a listing for "Full Screen Video". The default is disabled, you would then change this to "Automatic". This is the way it is on my other systems.
When you change this to automatic any video that uses the Directx call to overlay video on the Primary Monitor will be displayed full screen on the Secondary Monitor. PowerDvd and other players also work along with this.
Video Overlay though may not work on the secondary display though. So if playing a video in powerdvd & dragging the video to the secondary screen can cause a hardware lockup. So be careful dragging video players from the primary to the secondary screen. Some work and other s crash the system.

After you find the feaure in the Nvidia setup then in VS under preferences set to "Dual Head Display". There will also be a slight delay everytime you preview and the video is also displayed full screen on the 2nd monitor. This delay is the video card switching display modes on the secondary monitor.

I had an nVidia 4400 and now have a 6600 both are set with DualView and VS8,9, and 10+ never worked on the second monitor in dual-head device mode (still activated but has no effect).

Just for the record as I don't care in fact.
This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.

The key for me was locating "full screen video" in the nvidia settings and applying "auto" as suggested. Dualview and dual-head device alone didn't work for me.

Daniel,
Just for the record as I don't care in fact.
I can make it work on my GT6600 and it's by toggling the "Full Screen Video" switch from disabled to automatic.
I don't use it for VS or video apps that much, on one of my setups the 2nd monitor while in Dualview is the TV, so when playing back videos using software players on the primary monitor the videos will be displayed full screen on the TV.

Depending on the playback software & video card you cannot overlay/play video on the 2nd monitor. On mine to do this I would have to re-assign my 2nd display as the primary monitor.

The feature is nice for outputing to a SDTV or HDTV. You can also playback your complete project in VS (or any other software) and pipe it directly to a dvd recorder or any analog recording device. I usually use this feature when connecting the 6600GT to external devices.

You can also program the 6600GT to have dual virtual screens, so I also have 4 desktops at dual-monitor, the 4th is dual monitor with a TV as the 2nd monitor (the others are standard CRT Monitors). On that computer the 4 desktops are tied to hotkeys. Nvidia writes nice software.
These features are activated by accessing the advanced features and then activating the advanced desktop features.
