Compressing avi files shot by photo camera

Post by Anatoly »

I have lots of AVI video files shot by my Canon PowerShot photo camera. They are huge and I would like to compress them, but yet preserve the quality suitable for viewing from my PC on a big screen LCD TV. What Ulead settings, codecs, etc would you recommend using? I would like to preserve the aspect ratio.

The Properties of my AVI files are: 30 fps, data rate 1989 kbps, Compression MJPEG, Attributes 24 bits, 640 x 480.

Thank you.

I do not recommend you compress these further. They are highly compressed already. As long as you want to view these on a PC, why worry about file size? If you want to put these on a DVD you need to convert them to mpeg2 which will make the file sizes even bigger.

I worry because a 1.5 minute video clip takes 190MB. This means 1 hour takes more than 7.5 GB. At the same time I have a few compressed 90-munite feature films that take only 1.4 GB and have great quality.
Thanks!

You would be better advised to use a dedicated converter to convert your mjpeg format to DivX, Xvid or mpeg4. I don't have any experience with that but believe that SUPER can do it. Get a free download here http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Thank you for your recommendation. I am playing with the options and it looks like this is what I need.
