Computer Crashing

Post by Grandma Carol »

I'm using VS8 and love it.
I've also used the record selected audio from a CD before without any problem.
Except today! My computer crashes every time I try to play or record selected tracks as shown below.

To add music from an audio CD:
1. Click the Music & Voice tab.
2. Insert the audio CD into your CD drive.
3. To check if the disc is detected, see to it that Disc and Track in the Options Panel are enabled. Choose your desired song track from the Track drop-down list.
4. Click Play Selected Track to listen to the selected song track. When you are ready to record the song track into the Time line, click Record Selected Track.
5. Press [Esc] or click Stop to stop recording.
What is happening? And how can I fix my problem?
Thanks to all that reply.

Could it be a dodgy CD? Try another one to see if that's the problem.
Hope that helps.

No I've tried several cd s both home recorded and store bought. It crashes every time.
I am able to "voice over" on my projects, without any problem.
It's just when I try to import muisc from a cd.
Iv'e never had this problem before.
what to do? :(

Hi
I assume that the pc only crashes when playing a cd through VS 8, and is ok when playing a cd using another media player.
I can only suggest a ‘repair’ from the installation disc, that may cure your problem.
Pc’s are not nice when they just stop.

Adding audio to your timeline can be achieved in a few ways.

Use Real Player to record the cd to your hard drive, creating either wav or mp3.
Real Player will copy the disc quickly.
Import the audio files to a new audio library page.
Drag the thumbnails to the timeline, if required you can shorten the audio clips using the clip trim bars a either end.

hope this helps

I think Trevor's advice is excellent; if you don't have Real Player, then
(a) it's a free download, and
(b) the latest version of Windows Media Player (v 10) will also do this. Also a free download.
Whatever you use, try pulling the track off the CD, storing it as some kind of audio file, then inserting it into VS8.
Best of luck.

Thanks so much Trevor & Rindeyer.
I can record to real player and import to my video project, but I miss being able to see my project and play muisc so it fits.
I can't seem to find the "repair" in my VS8 intsall disc.
Trevor, please help instruct me so I can run it and hope it solves my problem. Do you think if the 'repair' doesn't work, I should un-install and re-install VS8?
Thanks sooo much for your replies.

from what i remember, if you run the install vs 8 program from the disc you will get the option to uninstall or repair.

This certainly works if you had the disc version of VS8; not sure about the downloaded version.
Go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Find and highlight Video Studio; you should be given the option to Uninstall or Repair. Select Repair; this is essentially a reinstall. Often fixes a number of issues.

I tried the 'repair', but still not working.
Should I uninstall VS8 and then re insall?
Or are there any other ideas?
Thanks

Well I managed to reproduce the problem :) Maybe this is of some relevance.
I spooled up VS8, loaded in a CD, tried to record a track, got a dialogue box "Can't record CD", then VS8 went all unresponsive and even Task Manager wouldn't shut it down. Had to hit the power switch on the laptop.
The answer (in my case): I have the Working Folder (ie where VS8 is going to put all its files) set up on my F: drive - an external HDD. After this excitement I realised that the F: drive wasn't switched on  Rebooting with the F: drive on - no problems.
Question: in File/Preferences/General, have you changed your Working Folder lately, and is it pointing to somewhere inaccessable?
Hope that is of some help, otherwise I'm stuck.

Try downloading Sherlock 2.0 to see if there is a problem with the codec handling the WAV audio on the CD.
