Pixels

Post by Rich2Putt »

This is the second time in 3 months this has happened.

After “capture” is completed, the video has a bad case of pixelazation. The capture is from a DV camcorder via firewire.

I believe when I captured from the camcorder, the capture setting was set at DVD.

Last time I had a case of bad pixels, I just recaptured the entire tape & it solved my problem.

Why would capturing in DVD have this effect?

Thanks………

By capturing to "DVD" you are getting the software and the computer to not only transfer the data from the tape in the cam but also to convert it "on the fly" to MPEG-2. Any number of things could interrupt that pocess and cause pixelization.
Anyway, the safest bet is to capture fronm a DV cam to DV AVI then do any conversions after that.

I notice that despite all your posts, you have never filled in your system profile -- and the details in your signature are not really a substitute.

If you are capturing from a DV device, the normal capture format is DV and not DVD. The latter implies that you are requiring your computer to take the original DV signal and transcode it on the fly into DVD compatible mpeg-2. Now many computers these days may be up to that job, but it is demanding of computer resources.

So if, for any reason, you computer is not quite up to it, then the conversion process on the fly is not going to work perfectly. And I would be surprised if pixellation is your only problem. Erratic stops and starts would be another as the capture process stops now and then to allow the transcode buffer to empty its contents as they are processed into mpeg-2, allowing VS space again to build up a buffer of DV waiting to be converted...

So unless it is imperative for some reason to capture a DV signal as DVD/mpeg-2, I would continue to capture it as DV, edit it as DV, and only in the final editing step, convert it to DVD compatible mpeg-2.

Thanks Lancecarr & Ken,

Because I capture analog video & DV from two different camcorders at different times, I sometimes forget to change the capture settings.

Didn't think it mattered in the final results. Thankfully it's a simple solution to correct..... :)

How do you capture via firewire from an analog camcorder?

I don't.........

The analog camcorder connects via RCA cables going to a digital converter box, & the converter box connects to the pc via USB.

Last night I re-captured from my DV camcorder & changed the capture setting to DV. Everything worked fine.....It was a matter of not capturing the DV correctly in the first place.
