You say VS11 crashes which is usually associated with as corrupt mpeg2 file.
But if you load the same exact video that crashes into VS10+ and create chapters then does VS10+ crash? Or any previous versions of VideoStudio?
If the file is corrupt maybe VS10 or VS11 can fix it by inserting the mpeg2 into the timeline, trim about 10 frames from the end or the beginning of the video. Then in VS11+ goto "Share -> Create Video File" -> "Mpeg Optimizer", let VS11+ create a new file and re-stamp it.
Then restart VS goto the burning module & insert the video and try to create chapters.
Don't know if Canopus is creating a bad mpeg or not.

etch - thanks for the advice.
here are the results of the experiments :
I can create chapters in VS9 using the Mpeg off Canopus !!
Putting the same Mpeg into VS11 the system crashes when placing Mpegs into create Disc / chapters
I tried cutting 10 frames off and then put it through the optimser > it still crashed when adding chapters in VS11.
I'm off tomorrow for 7 days so will need to resume your good advice upon my return.
Many thanks Vince

Hi PaulMD,
I've just come back over here in desperation to see whether I'm the only person who cannot get v.11 work on my machine, and I read your experience. Mine's been exactly the same. I trialled vl10 for a month, and unfortunately Ulead 'upgraded' to v.11 during that period. Imagining that performance would be the same, I bought it, but I simply can't make it work.
If I try to add any colour correction then the playback becomes jerky and awkward; the start/end frame controls don't work properly; if I select too short a clip then it won't play back properly; if I try to add colour correction then sound synch is lost; etc etc.
I came here several weeks ago to ask for help, and was told that this is a reflection of the sort of video files I'm using. The point, though, is that the same video files worked perfectly in v.10 and they don't in v.11. Version 11 is the problem.
I was also advised to upgrade my graphics card (and I was grateful for that constructive advice). I've done so, but unfortunately that hasn't helped.
In desperation I wrote today to Ulead to ask whether I could transfer my registration from v.11 to v.10, but I've no idea whether they'll write back. I'm not optimistic, but I feel it's very unfair to offer a month's trial on one product and then sell a different one.
I'm looking into alternatives to Ulead now. I feel I've wasted my money and my time. Good luck with your problems - I hope you can get some of them sorted out!

Vincej,
So really VS9 works and VS11+ doesn't work using the same workflow.
I'm having a problem writing back to HDV tape in VS11+ right now, before creating the HDV file in transport stream I disabled smart render..
So VS11+ is producing g HDV file in TS (transport Stream) format on the harddisk to stream back to the tape.
I'll edit this post when I finish to post the result.
With SmartRender turned on writing back to HDV tape doesn't work properly, the video jumps or studders.
With SmartRender turned off writing back to HDV tape is working.
Using a Sony HC3 hd camcorder.
