VS 11 Plus and common file folder question

Post by jblank37 »

After upgrading to VS 11 Plus, installation seems to be OK, but now each time I start up my system I have a folder named "common" appear on my desktop. I have found this folder under (program files, common files, Ulead, common). Inside the common folder is (bin, uagent service.dll). My question, is there a reason that this is appearing on my desktop? If not, how do I keep it from appearing? I did not have this with VS 10 Plus and a couple of versions before that. I have a Gateway 2.2 Ghz running XP home edition. Thanks very much in advance.

Ulead products install a common files directory in this location:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems
The programs use these files for normal operation.

Is the common files folder on your desktop a "ShortCut" or the actual folder?

In the above listed directory you should have about 6 other directories under that directory. All these sub-directories also contain ulead program files.
Under my installation there are 6 more directories under the common files directory.
They are: Capture, Codec, DVD, Filters, MPEG, VIO.

You may need to un-install VS11+ again and re-install. After un-installing if the folder is still there then maybe move it to the trash bin (I wouldn't delete it entirely).
I haven't come across this problem.

Thanks for the reply etech6355, it is the actual folder. I hope I don't have to reinstall since everything seems to working correctly other than this one item.

etech6355, also the 6 directories that you mention are in a folder named "Ulead Sytems" under the common files folder. Is that where yours are? Thanks

Yes, this has always been on my ulead installations, never on my desktop.
It's rather unusual. VS11+ could be using VS10+ files and maybe you don't know it (I guess).
I would look at the dates of the files in the ulead common files directory. They should have recent dates on most of them.
Under the DVD directory mine say 5/13/07 if this helps. I would say that the folder on the desktop doesn't belong there and if the files in the ulead common directories have older dates then they are most likely VS10's files.
Almost all the files should have this recent date. If not I would remove & re-install again.

Are you sure this isn't just a shortcut to the common files directory?
Right_click on the folder you say is on the Desktop and select Properties. If it's a shortcut it will say shortcut on one of the tabs.

etech6355, I really appreciate you trying to help me on this. No, it is not a shortcut. I looked under properties and no sign of it being a shortcut. It is the Ulead folder that is under common files. In this Ulead folder is a folder called "common" and double clicking on that is a folder called "bin" and double clicking on that is a file called "UagentService.dll". Do you think that it might be safe to move this folder to a different location and everything work OK? If so where might I move it to?

jBlank37,

I think I may have the answer for you.

Whenever one installs multiple Ulead programs, especially the photo-specific programs such as PhotoImpact and PhotoExplorer, you will see them activate a program called "Ulead Auto Detector" which appears as a tiny icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the desktop) of my Microsoft Windows XP Home installation.

I also have a Gateway laptop.

I've noted that when this "Ulead Auto Detector" application is running in the system tray, it causes the folder you mention to appear following reboot.

DO NOT DELETE THE FOLDER.

To prevent it from appearing, check to see if this Ulead Auto Detector icon is in your system tray (running in the background).

If it is, then you can go into the OPTIONS menu of that program and deactivate it.

It apparently has something to do with the detection of memory cards containing digital photos.

I found that when I deactivated this program to keep it from running on reboot that the folder you mention no longer appeared on my desktop.

I hope this helps,

This doesn't appear to be the common files that I was speaking of.
I don't know, maybe someone else knows.
Sounds like an auto update or registration type of name.
I searched my computer and couldn't find that file.

Did you install WinDvd or another program from ulead that might have come with VS11?

By the way, I once made the mistake of deleting that folder.

You don't even want to know what I had to do to get my computer to behave properly afterward.

(Hint: A Clean Reinstallation Of Microsoft Windows)

On my system, I noted that same DLL appeared in the folder that appeared on my desktop.

And it seemed to be directly related to Ulead PhotoImpact and Ulead PhotoExplorer on my system.

But perhaps there are other Ulead programs that utilize it.

Jerry, thanks for getting in on this. First of all, I am not about to delete anything. I know from experience also. I recently purchased VS 11 Plus along with Photo Impact 12. Photo Impact arrived before VS 11 Plus. I went on and installed PI 12. I did notice the Ulead detector in my system tray. It was there each time I started my system up. Yesterday, after installing VS 11 Plus, I notice that the detector icon is no longer in my system tray. The program is still under Start, all programs. I run it and it appears in my system tray. I right click on it and then click on options and it shows "PhotoImpact 12" and "Ulead Photo explorer". I have tried to restart after having the detector in my system tray, but on startup, I still get the Ulead folder and the detector is no longer in the system tray. Any other suggestions on this?

etech6355, yes, I did install Win DVD and also Disc Image Recorder from the bonus disc.

When I get back home, I'll take a look at mine; I seem to recall the menu of "Ulead Auto Detector" is odd and confusing.

I'll give you the exact steps then.

I'm in my university office at the moment.

Jerry, man, you are my hero. Please disregard my last post. That was the exact answer. I just wasn't noticing the check mark that was saying "Run auto detect on windows startup". I unchecked that and I now no longer have the folder appearing. I sure wasn't wanting to do a reinstall since everything seems to be working correctly. By the way, I have followed your tutorial on Video Studio since version 8 and have had great results. I thank you again for your help and the time you put in on helping other people.

etech6355, again I thank you for your help also.
