Now that I have gotten rid of the "unable to switch to capture mode" problem I have a new one. I start the video playing from my camera to the preview screen and then hit "start capture" - the video on the screen stops and nothing happens. When I hit Stop Capture I get a message that says the capture failed - the file is corrupted and will automatically be deleted. Any solutions out there?
Details - Using a Plextor Covertx with a Sharp minidv Camcorder. I know you all don't like USB BUT I have used both and prefer my Plextor - besides which, which ever YOUR Preference, that doesn't excuse a USB connection not working - especially when this same set up worked JUST FINE with a previous version of Video Studio!
I notice that I do not get the video controls on the preview screen and I also have no choices in the format drop down box - it just says DVD and that is all.

Just in case any of you wish to know - the only way I can capture with version 11 is to use my firewire - I don't care for Firewire as it takes longer (no "transcoding" with convertx).
So, for the moment the only solution is to use the firewire OR use Video Studio 8 to capture with Convertx and then use version 11 to edit.
There is no reason that hardware that works with an earlier version should not work with the most curent release!
Anyone who is trying to move old home movies from VHS to DVD will face the same problem - unless someone out there knows of another way to connect the VCR for video capture?

There is if the hardware manufacturer has themselves tweaked the earlier version of the software to work with their hardware; and won't give the software manufacturer the tweaking code for later versions of the software. There is no reason that hardware that works with an earlier version should not work with the most curent release!
There are a number of hardware companies who do this and there is very little that software manufacturers like Ulead can do about it...

Thanks for your input Ken but there has to be more of a relationship between the two when the Ulead Video Studio is the software that is bundled with the Device - wouldn't you think?
My device is not an offshoot oddball device - shouldn't Ulead - Sorry - Corel make their software compatible with as many mainstream devices as possible?
I mean, what devices do they recommend with their software?
This is video editing software - how would a consumer ever know what to buy if the editing software only works with certain things? I don't think it's unreasonable to expect video editing software to work with video capturing devices.
Don't get me wrong - what you are saying might be totally true, but it is not an acceptable asnswer from a consumer viewpoint.

I completely agree. But from the hardware maker's point of view, their device works, and they provide the software to process it further.
And just because Ulead happens to provide the software, doesn't imply they are in on the technological secret of what makes the hardware work. They simply sell a fixed number of their software packages to Plextor as they would with any other commercial customer. I am sure Ulead would love to have the proprietary information on what Plextor does to tweak it.
But they do not appear to have it. And in the meantime, they provide software which works on the great majority of devices.
But this is one of the reasons why we recommend that people as far as possible capture using the software which comes with a capture device. Then once the video is captured, it can be opened in a later version of VS for editing.
Once again, I agree that this is not a particularly acceptable solution for the consumer. But the reality is that it may be the only work-around available...
