DV Capture Not Working

I am trying to capture DV video from a Sony Handycam DCR-HC21 using a 1394 cable. I have tried with MF 5+ and with VS 11+ (trial version), both with the same results. When I select that I want to capture, all of the controls are enabled, and I can control the camera through the software. The preview screen shows the first frame of the video but goes no further, even though the camera is playing. I do not get an error message, nor does the capture time out. It just does not capture anything.

Here's another twist using both applications mentioned...The capture functionality worked the initial time I tried each application, but has very rarely worked since. I've now tried each application at least 10 times without any success.

Can someone please help?
