VS11 - Hauppauge PVR-350?

Post by Manzano808 »

Aloha! We saw some various posts about capturing problems but thought it best that I should put this into separate post. I apologize if I didn't go back far enough to see anything on this.

After noting several people here not being able to capture with this card using VS10, we shined it for version 11. We read here that this Hauppauge card is working now in the new version 11.

Any ideas why we are receiving the error "Unable to switch to Capture Mode. Check if you video capture driver is working properly. [15023:4:2] " ?

Thanks for any help.

Capture Plugins?

Post by Manzano808 »

I don't know if this has anything to do with this problem but with version 10+ i noted that there are far more Capture plug-ins. For instance, the one that is chosen is "Ulead DSW MPEG Capture plug-in" and there are more choices available like "Ulead DirectShow...", "Windows Media...", "Ulead Mpeg4...", "Ulead HDV...", "Ulead DV8-T...".

For VS11 the only choice is "IVI Capture Plug-in".

It may be a waste of time, but I'm going to try version 10+ to see for myself if will or will not recognise the PVR-350. I'll report findings for anyone interested.

Does *ANY* Version Work?!!

Post by Manzano808 »

Does anyone know the secret to getting *any* version of VideoStudio working with this card?!

Tried versions 9, 10+, 11+ with no luck. Every one displays this error. It seems the card shows up correctly, but the error and black window instead of the correct channel preview.

I've checked that we can record properly using WinTV app.

We shall now try MovieFactory to see if any versions of that work with this card. However, we prefer using VS! :(

MovieFactory Works

Post by Manzano808 »

Well, I got MovieFactory 5 working with this card. So far, that's the only Ulead app I can get working.

Can anyone tell me what's going on with VS not working with this card?

Thank you very much for any help!

Can anyone tell me what's going on with VS not working with this card?
Well... I have a hypothesis... :?

My theory is that video capture drivers are not as standardized as more-common computer peripherals, like printers. It appears that some programs just can't communicate with some capture hardware/drivers.

A driver is an interpreter or translator that allows communication between the hardware and the software/operating system. For example, Microsoft specifies how printer drivers are to communicate with the software & operating system. So, a programmer can write a word processing program that can communicate with any printer driver.... However, I don't know if there are standards for video-capture devices. (MiniDV camcorder drivers do seem to be standardized.) The hardware manufacturer has to write the driver because only he knows how to communicate with the hardware-side. The software writer has to make his program comunicate with the harware manufacturer's driver. With very-specialized hardware, the hardware manufacturer has to provide the software too, or he has to provide the software vendor with the driver interface specs, and the software vendor has to customize his software to work with the specialized hardware/driver...
Well, I got MovieFactory 5 working with this card.
If you are using an SE version of MF5 that came with the capture card, it may have been tweaked to work with the hardware, or it may have come with an additional driver...

The bottom line is, that it's almost always best to use the capture software that came with your hardware! Once you have a digital video file on your hard drive, you can use any video editing software that works with your particular video file format.

YES YES YES... This is right smack along the lines i was thinking. As an old "Ironworker" [Hardware Tech], this is only hypothesis that makes sense. It's obvious that even tho I was able to get MF5+ working, there are still some Advanced Settings missing. There is no way to change what resolution and other properties the card will be using to capture at. Since the card does work in every other way, it must be DVDDoug's excellent hypothethis is true.

It's just that I have been spoiled with VS and ATI cards, and know exactly what I must do for whatever resolution I need. I do not have experience with WinTV settings, so I did everything I could to get a Ulead product working with this Hauppauge card. Guess I was doomed from the start but didn't know it until now. :(

I tell you what. Steve, why don't you just give me the information that you've FORGOTTEN in the last few months... that way, I could get this rolling without too much of a learning curve. ;) :) Seriously, I'm going back to your guide because I recall you actually discuss WinTV2000 recording/capturing. Maybe you've put in some cool stuff on settings there.

Thank you DVDDoug for confirming what I pretty much suspected all along.

The possible solution is listed in the other threads. If you are using xp you just need to download the Aprill 2007 update to directx from microsoft.

Now, What I don't know is if your particular card or devices will work with 11 or not - however I do know this will eliminate the "unable to switch to capture mode problem". Only after you have fixed that will you then know if you can successfully capture or not.

I cannot use my Plextor Convertx with version 11 however it does work with version 8.

FYI Video Studio 9 has a Plugin for the Happauge 350-250 card. It worked for me awhile back, it seems if you load the HD plugin it will disable the Hauppauge plugin.

Movie Factory 5 worked from day one on my Happauge card, however it would give a error message but continue to work. MF5 has a patch for the Happauge and Terratec Grabster. The patch is more of an upgrade for MF5 due to the fact it fixed a lot of the problems I used to have and I don't get the error message when I capture from the card.

I could never get my Happauge card to work in VS10+.

I'm capturing VBR@9000kbs HighQuality using VS11+ right now using the Hauppauge PVR 150 Model# 1040 or 1045 (forget).
Works nice, in the Options you can scan the TV Channels and on the last tab is where you select the Quality of the Video Recording. Looks like these capturing templates are already tailored to the PVR150 card.
As far as I know the 250 & 350 are exactly the same as the 150 except the other's have 2 tuners and more features.

I'm now using DX9b. This sounds like I need to upgrade to 9c and get a patch?! Ugh dread updating DX but if that's the only way...

Do you happen to know the KB patch/filename?

Thanks for this info!

GRRRRROWL

Post by Manzano808 »

Well, I did update the DX and yes, it allowed me to capture in VS11. You were right about that. However, the capture was jerky and hopelessly bad. I went back to VS9 and installed Hauppauge patch and it worked, but again, wouldn't allow me to change capture properties. But at least the captured file was ok in VS9. I just couldn't figure out how to change capture properties. Nothing I tried worked. Captured file stayed at the same properties no matter what.

I'm to the point of admitting defeat. I guess i'll just learn WinTV and hope I get as good with that as I was with the AIW/VS combination that worked so great.

Thanks EVERYONE, for all your help on this.

You might want to try Movie Factory 5, it allows you to create custom templates to capture video. I have tried to use Ulead's capture modules in VS9 and MF5 and discovered that WinTV2000 has more options in their capture settings.
