Combining vsp files

Post by Hugo »

I feel I already know the answer to this, but thought I'd ask anyhooow.

Is it possible in any way to 'combine' or append vsp files?

I started a large project, so I decided to create smaller more manageable segments. Each of these segments have the same project properties and have their own vsp file.

However, I'd really like to be able to have one vsp open in 'edit' and append another vsp to it, thereby being able to edit the combined version into one new vsp.

Does that make sense? Is anyone following me?

So far, it seems that if I have a vsp open in edit, and drop another vsp onto the timeline, I don't get access to the individual components of the appended vsp, it just appears as one piece.

I hope I've explained this clearly. It's not vital, not a matter of life or death, but if there's a way to have 2 or more vsp's open and editable in the timeline at the same time, it'd make things easier for me.

cheers ... Paul

Hi Hugo,

When you insert a VSP, it then acts like a video clip. All the components are mixed together. So you would have to open the VSP as a project to gain access to the individual components.

Yep, thanks Vidman - that's exactly my problem / question. If I have one vsp open as a project, then is it possible to open a second (or third, fourth) vsp as an appended project, so that all components of all vsp files are available on the timeline at the same time.

Actually, that sounds like a far better explanation than my first posting :)

If I have a project open, and then select another project, the act of opening the second project (vsp) automatically clears the timeline and replaces it with the newly opened file. If possible, I'd like them BOTH to be editable at the same time.

I understand what you are wanting. However that is not possible with VS. You can have only 1 project active at a time, and only 1 instance of VS running.

Thanks Ron -

I pretty much knew that was going to be the case, but with all the work-arounds and gurus in this group, I thought it was worth asking :)

Just to be clear:

You CAN drag a .VSP file/project into the timeline of another project - you just can't edit it (apart from trimming) there. But once you have all your small projects just so, it is quite possible to combine them on one timeline for maybe adding final titles and music, before rendering or disc authoring.

Yep, thanks Tobie. Got the dragging part sorted out, it's the editing I was after.
