how do i save my clips into a folder ?

I am a total beginner here i eventually want to make a dvd of my old home movies.I can transfure them on to a dvd in there raw state but i want to get them onto my pc so i can edit them.i can load dvd up to watch on my pc but how do i take sections of them and save them into a folder??? Do I need special softwear for this or is there a button on the 'Ulead' video program that lets me do this so that i can begin my project?
