I did see a few threads about this, but none of them really helped me.
I watch some anime, which is encoded in .avi and it has english subtitles, the audio is japanese. I've tried several programs to encode these to dvd-rw so that i can watch them on my own tv. My DVD burner came with WinDVD creator, but even though its .avi it wont accept the files, it gets an error message.
Could anyone help me encode these using WinDVD or another encoder, preferably freeware.
Thanks
Converting .avi to dvd

Welcome to the forums,
What is the error message you are getting?
First we need to determine what format your video clips are. AVI is not a format, it is a wrapper or container, much like a "zip file". An AVI may contain DV (digital video), DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4, or even MOV files. There is an actual avi which is uncompressed and takes up about 65 gig of space per hour of video. I doubt that your file is uncompressed or raw avi.
You can not create a DVD from an AVI. You must first create a DVD compliant MPEG-2 video file. DVD specs require the video file format to be MPEG-2, along with certain frame sizes, and data rates.
I'm not familiar with WinDVD Creator, so I don't know if it has the ability to first render a video file, or what procedure to use to accomplish that. Try locating a menu option to create/render a video file, then make sure you use a DVD compliant template if it has those. Once you have your compliant DVD video file, then try burning a disk.
There may also be a problem with compatibility between your burner and the brand/type of media you're using.

I have this text here, don't know what language it is in, can you tell me if you know someone who could translate it into english?
Get real man. How could anyone suggest an encoder to convert an unknown format? If it is that important to you, I suggest you find out what file format is used for your clip.
