Audio playback problem when editing

Post by orpioneer »

I'm very much a newbie at this but I've searched the boards (and manual) carefully without finding an answer, so I hope someone has a suggestion. I even bought those VS10 tutorial videos hoping to see that I was doing something simple wrong, but no dice. Note that I don't know that much about the inner workings of computers either, but I don't think I should have to be a computer expert to use this program.

Nature of the problem
I'm runinng VideoStudio 10 Plus. When I have a sparate audio track in my project, and play back my project in Project (as opposed to just playing the clip) I often find that the adjustments I have made to the sound level are not being applied. For instance, in my current project I have split the audio from the video and adjusted the audio level on the sound track to 20 percent. But when I play the project file the sound from that audio track plays at full volume. If I play just the sound clip, it plays at the 20 percent level as it is supposed to do. So far, every time this has cropped up, I think it has been at sme point after I've clicked the audio view button so that the sound shows up in wave forms on the screen. It's very frustrating to not be able to hear the sound properly when I'm trying to edit the project. I don't know if this is a bug, or if I'm just doing something wrong. But I hope somebody can help.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?)
The video files are originally from my video camera, but at the moment they are saved as project files (VSP).

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
I capture to and maintain my video files on an external hard drive, a Workbook drive, which uses FAT32 file structure. That seemed like a good idea after what I read in the manual about write behind caching.
From DXDiag
Free Space: 109.6 GB
Total Space: 238.4 GB
File System: FAT32
Model: WD 2500JS External USB Device

Project Settings
I think the files are captured from the camera in DV1, but the project settings are the default which seem to be MPEG.

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)
Eventually I'll output to DVD.

PAL or NTSC
NTSC.

Error Codes (if any)
None for this. I have noticed that every time I close Video Studio it hangs and then sends off a message saying there was a problem.

Unless someone else has experienced this problem and found a fix I would suggest a reinstallation but before doing so you could try doing a repair see if that works. If not read this Tutorial on removing and reinstalling before starting.

This suggests there is a problem with your installation.
Feedback after members have endeavoured to help you is not only good manners it also helps others to know if a given solution was effective. Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is that you may have clicked on the Mute button, thus reactivating the original audio embedded in the video track.

I know you said you split the audio and adjusted its sound. But it is a little known fact that you can split the audio and delete that split track altogether, yet the original sound is still there in the video track. All that happens when you split the audio is that the Mute button is automatically applied to the main video track. And if you inadvertently click it again, the original audio at its full level will play.

Many thanks for your thoughtful responses. You are probably right that I will have to reinstall the program, I've only been holding off until I finished dealing with my current batch of clips because I understand that you lose your libraries with a reinstall. Oddly enough the program has currently stopped giving me an error message whenever I shut the program down, but there are some other kinks, like the ripple editing that only works when I set chapter points where I want the audio, title, etc. to move with the video. (And yes, I have ripple editing turned on on each track).

I did find a suggestion in the forum to get out of the audio view in order to hear changes to the audio track, and that has worked on this project at least, though I find this very cumbersome and wonder if it's the way the program is really supposed to work. There have been past instances where this approach has not worked though, and it may be that there I had somehow hit the mute button as Ken Berry suggested. So I'm going to keep an eye out for that one too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep plugging away and if this comes up again I'll have some additional details to post on the problem.

VideoStudio is a fine video editor, but is lacking a bit in audio editing. Very often I use Audacity for my audio editing.
