Editing - Newbie

Post by sergiolon »

Newbie !
I have trimmed a wedding video and added the files to my library.
I have downloaded several user guides from UTube, although the quality was not great.
I'm having problems with editing.
I place the clips in the timeline and I wish to alter the quality ( Brightness etc ) on some clips, others I wish to adjust volume.
When I make the adjustments do I need to save each clip as an individual project or should I make the adjustments to each clip and then save the entire project?
I have a full purchased version and whilst I found Sony Vegas extremely complicated, their Guide is much better written.
Thanks !

Welcome.
You will find lots of help here and there are tutorials as well.
You do not need to save each clip, rather save the entire project. That way the original clips remain unchanged should you need to use them again in their original format. The project stores information on each clips, length position in the timeline etc as well as any changes you have made such as video attributes (change of brightness etc) and audio attributes (volume etc).
When you reload a saved project all the changes you have previously made are displayed in the timeline.

I also noticed some of the video tutorials on YouTube are not accurate. For example one video tutorial states that you need to move your video to an overlay track so that you can adjust it to the right, or add space. What the author apparently does not know, is that you just need to place a color clip to the left of the video in the main track, and the video will slide to the right to accommodate the color clip. You can then adjust the duration of the color clip for however long you need it to be for your titles etc..

Ron,
It's a pity that the author of that tutorial didn't use a tripod for his camera or better still use something like Camtasia for better clarity.
I couldn't be bothered watching too much as it was all over the screen.

Thanks ... I think I'm getting the hang of it, at least, on this occasion I actually burned a small project to DVD to view the results rather than spend a lot of time 'playing' and getting nowhere.
The result was fine, albeit some tweaking required.

I'm keen to view other peoples' work, overlays and affects - so often I can lack creativity, seeing someone else use even a slightly different colour can change the outlook.

I'm viewing some of the work uploaded onto Veoh, wondered if there is more of this genre anywhere else?

As for the work uploaded onto Youtube, yes, the lack of a tripod did make viewing difficult, there are some excellent tutorials on Sony Vegas.
The way I look at these projects, I certainly wouldn't have the time - even if I had the knowledge to create these tutorials .... hats off to all who offer their time here, on youtube and the like assisting people like me !
