VS9 AMATEUR
I managed to make a short audio clip lasting 8secs by trimmimg in Audio/ Auto Music as an introduction to a video made on a video camera. On testing on the Music track, it was a success.
But when I went back to Story board line and tested the clip, I could not hear the recorded audio. Have I got to save it first? Any direction on how to achieve this would be much appreciated. THANKS

What was your source audio format, MP3 or WAV? Can you post the audio file properties here? I know this is a silly question, but does your audio clip run the entire duration of your video clip? If not, then are you previewing the portion that would have the audio?

Music source is one of inbuilt from VS 9
Ken Berry-
If I click 'play button' in either the Storyboard view or Timeline view under 'Project', rendering commnces. I do not wish to render at this stage
but to test the introduction music first, as I wish to add more back ground music to the whole video, duration 43mts.
Thank you very much for your comments.

'In order to play, VS eeds to render a pre-view'
Now its all clear!. That means SJJ1805's Method 1 '...to create a new video file on your hard drive.....a stand alone and playabe video' may be the best way forward to minimise re-rendering, which I understand reduces the quality of end product.
But I do not know how to create a file on my hard drive, once any editing is done. What action have I got to perform? Sorry, most of my questions would be silly/dumb, as a novice.
I started life using Log-Tables; many moons ago, say to multiply 23.078 by 569.009. Now it could be done with a $3 machine called, calculator, in 3 seconds.
Thank again.

Regarding the rendering before preview, check in File > Preferences to make sure you have selected Instant Playback and not High Quality Playback. The latter renders a temporary file before preview commences. But note that it is a temporary file only and does not affect any later rendering you do when you select Share > Create Video File.

When you select Share > Create Disc, the burning module opens. You simply click on the Add Media button in the top left of screen, and browse to where your new mpeg-2 is stored. Select OK and the mpeg-2 should appear in the burning module timeline.
(Note: I am currently away from home and don't have any version of VS on the computer I am using. Can't remember if the relevant button in VS9 is 'Add Media' or 'Insert Video', but it will be something along those lines.)

Creating menu
Thanks Ken Berry
So far so good with all the invaluable help
I am in creating menus. Why is that I am unable to move around title or the thumb- nail in the way I could in MF?
Also VA 9-menu does not have the gridline facilities-disappointed.
I am in Create disc page.
Thank you.

I am sorry but I don't have any video editing program on the computer I am using (I am currently away from home on a trip) so cannot comment on your question about moving things about. Hopefully someone else might jump in and offer some advice on this.
However, it would be a mistake to think that VS9 can do the same things as MF when it comes to making a menu. This is what MF is primarily designed to do, and it just happens to have some limited editing capacity added to it. But it is primarily a DVD authoring program, and thus will do this aspect of producing a DVD better and with more bells and whistles than VS.
VS on the other hand, is primarily a video editing program, and does this aspect of the whole process better than MF. But it just happens to have some authoring facilities which are more basic than those in MF.
In other words, VS and MF are complementary programs. One does editing better; the other does authoring better. A lot of us on this Board, me included, for instance, use VS to edit our projects, but then, after producing our DVD compatible mpeg-2, we use MF to build the menus and actually burn the disc because it is better at this than VS.
More recent versions of VS have, however, narrowed the gap considerably.

dvd created in Australia
I received a dvd, 105mts long from Australia.I live in UK
Used MF4 to import and created an .iso file, the contents of which was 3.78GB well with in a single disc space.
Then I opened this file in VS9, dragged it from library, clicked yes to
'match to project properties...to the original video',
then I opened share>create disc to check the space availability ,the contents had overflowed to 6.02GB
Why has it incresed to 6.02GB from 3.78GB, when I had not done any editing what so ever. Any suggestions please is much appreciated. Thank you

Why did you adopt that particular workflow? I mean, why did you create an ISO in MF and then open it in VS for burning? (In fact, I did not even know it was possible to import an ISO file into VS itself. There is a separate disc image burner which comes bundled with VS, and you will find it in the main Windows program menu with VS. It is called something like VCD DVD Disc Image Burner, but I am sorry -- I am out of town at the moment and don't have VS on this computer, and can't recal the exact name.)
If you have an existing DVD and don't intend to edit it, but simply want to copy it, then I would simply use Nero or some other program to make a copy.
And Nero and other programs will also burn ISO files as they are.

Many thanks Ken
After creating an iso file in MF4, it was not my intention to burn in VS9, but
just to check things, out of curiosity what would happen
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am now trying to multi trim 8 portions of an existing project on Time-line view -total duration 15mts.
But after rendering in story-board line, the video length was only 12mts.
Also, about half way ,the video halted while the audio continued.
But when stopped and re-started video and audio came back and finished at 12mts, although the 8 portion were still on 'line. Did I miss anything in between? Thanks again
Any help is much appreciated
