can i retreave dvd clips from my folders to work with them

I have my home movies in dvd format .I want to use 'ulead' to edit and shorten them.Can I do this ?
How do I put my clips into a folder on my computer firstly and then is it as simple as opening them within my ulead program doing the work and re saving them ???
I am totally a beginer here i don't even have a clue as to how to get the dvds stored in my computer folders !!!!
Any help out there ???
