Displayed file size on save different than actual size

Post by zipzip »

When I save an image, I select Invoke Options and rely on the Image Optimizer to let me know how big the file I'm saving will be (for web images). I've recently upgraded from PhotoImpact v8 to v12, and I'm finding that the projected file size as displayed in the Image Optimizer is no longer accurate at all.

For example, when the optimizer says the file will be 15kb, the actual saved file may be 23kb, which is 50% bigger. This was not a problem for me in v8, nor is it a problem in other graphics programs I use. Is this a known issue?

Thanks in advance

On another web forum, one person was having a similar issue with PI 12, which nobody else could seem to replicate with their version...

What is the original source of your image? Digital camera, perhaps?

Most of the images are probably from a digital camera. I haven't found an option to remove camera-related metadata, and I don't recall setting a similar option in v8 (though it may have been awhile ago). Is there such a setting?

Not that I've been able to locate.

I tried resizing an image from a camera, and had no discrepancy like you did. The saved size was the size indicated, to the byte.

You could email me the original image, and tell me exactly what settings you are using so I can try to duplicate the issue on my end... or dig further into the mystery.

Thanks for the offer. First, I'll experiment with a range of files of different qualities/sizes and see if a particular pattern emerges.

Fyi, if anyone else encounters this issue, the workaround is to "Save for Web" (File->More Save Options->Save for Web) instead of using the normal "Save" option. This creates a file that matches the projected file size.

Thanks Robert/VikingAnimations for the help!
