You need to tell us what type of video you are trying to capture, and how you are doing it exactly.

If for instance you have a digital mini DV camera attached by firewire and switched on, the capture mode should default to DV and not AVI. But if you are, say, trying to capture from an analogue source using a USB capture device, it is unlikely you could capture to DV, so the default would be AVI.

If you don't have anything connected, I imagine the default would also be AVI.

As far as I am aware, that is an analogue capture card, and so cannot capture to DV. It is not surprising therefore that it defaults to AVI if you had accidentally set it to DVB But you should still be able to capture to mpeg-2.

However, it is probably more indicative of the fact that you should be using the software which came with the Winfast card to capture, then open that captured file in VS for editing.

I used to have a Winfast analogue capture card, and that is the way I would do it then == though I could capture direct to DVD compatible mpeg-2 as well.

First, you should be using the latest service pack to windows.
I would first going to "Change Capture Plugin" and change it the the one that has the wording MPEG in it, can't remember the exact name of the Mpeg Capture Plugin. It may be set to the DV capture plugin.
Also, make sure to install the latest DirectX drivers which I think is 9.0c

I usually capture as Ken suggested using the software that came with the capturing device. To many proprietary capture cards out there with custom chipsets.
