Vista/AVCHD jerky playback

Post by markk655 »

I am in the process of checking out VS11+ to edit my AVCHD footage. I just installed VS11+ trial on my Intel E6700 (dual core 2.66 GHz), 4GB RAM with Vista Home Premium. My Videocard is a Nvidia Geforce 7600GT (256 MB) The installation completed with no issue. I checked old DV footage by bringing in some of the files from my previous camcorder - no problem.

I imported the AVCHD files from my Panasonic HDC-SD1 with no issue either. When I play back the clip, the playback is barely OK. It seems to stutter a bit, but not a huge amount. However, when I play back the same clip in the project, the video and audio both stutter. It seems to be worse with DD5.1 turned on, but it is still not playing up to standards even with the stereo. The cpu performance is typically less than 50% (maxed at around 75%). So, I don't think that is the problem.

I have seen other threads that address similar issues that discuss terminating memory resident programs, virus checkers, etc...I have yet to embark on my "MSConfig mission" to stop the startup programs/services, but (in advance) I was wondering if anyone knows of:

a. any specific programs that cause similar issues with VS11+ (or VS10)
b. a list of required Vista processes (I still think in terms of XP) that I need to keep
c. compatibility issues with Notron Internet Security, Nero Ultra Enhanced 7 or Super (erightSoft)? My gut feeling is that if it does turn out to be a conflict is that it is one of those.....
d. Does VS11+ comes with its own AVCHD codec? If so, is there a way to ensure that is the one being used? I do get very similar playback from Nero which likely means it may not be a specific VS11+ issue.

I also plan to update the video drivers. Mine are fairly recent, but Nvidia just updated the drivers on May 2, so I'll check that out too. However, I read the release notes and there didn't seem to be anything specific to this type of issue for my video card. Also, it is a relatively new HDD (SATA II, 7200 rpm), so I doubt that the HDD or fragmentation is an issue.

Any thoughts or anything else to consider?

AVCHD workflow?

I am also curious to hear what others are doing with their AVCHD footage for editing. Are you converting to another format (such as HD-MPEG2) for editing? Are you using smartproxy?

Essentially, what is your AVCHD workflow once the AVCHD files get onto the hard drive?

Same Here

Same Here! Total stutter with AVCHD files - almost the exact same hardare config. I can't work on a project, because I can't even preview it without total stuttering. Can anyone help?

Have you installed both the update patch and Power Pack for VS11+?
