Overlay Gif animations or Avi with tranparency

Hello...
I'm trying to put some funny gifs animations or avi (Gif transformed to Avi.) files overlaying the main video, but the transparency of the animation doesn't work, it shows the whole square gray, black or white; so far the only object or files that keep the transparency are the *.PNG (good quality) graphics. I'd like to use them so I can make my videos more funny with promps or cartoon/funny animation KEEPING the transparency.
Is any other way I can do that?

You can use gifs or avis providing they have been created using 32bit with a transparent alpha layer - one programme which can produce suitable overlays is Ulead Cool3D.
