You are absolutely correct Ken. I am struggling with when to use "Save" versus "Save As," assuming that "Save As" in this context should ever be used. After reading the various recommended generic workflows on the Forum and then adjusting them based on what I understood from Forum suggestions, I have been saving my projects at three separate times.

1. At the start of my Edit workflow, I select >File, >New Project, but since there is no pop up window at that point to name my new project, I go back to >File, and then either >Save, or >Save As. Am I correct in understanding that I should use "Save" at this point to name my new project and in the process, replace the name "Untitled" in the window in the upper left corner of the Edit screen?

2. Upon completion of my Edit workflow, and before I produce my DVD-compliant mpeg-2 video file, I use >Save, to save what is now my edited project. Correct?

3. I then select >Share, >Creat Video File, >Same as Project Settings, >Save, and the rendering starts immediately. In your last reply, you said, "Save after Same as Project Settings is where you save a name for your file which is about to be created." But as soon as I select "Save" at that time, rendering starts right away and there isn't an opportunity to "save a name for your file which is about to be created." Therefore, at the conclusion of the rendering process, I had been using >File, >Save As , to name my new mpeg-2 video file. Hence, I have three questions relating to this process:

A. Should I be seeing an opportunity to, "save a name for your file which is about to be created," after I select "Save" and before rendering begins?

B. Is it appropriate, or recommended, to name the new mpeg-2 video file before clearing my timeline to start my Share/Create DVD workflow?

C. If the answer to B above is yes, should I be using >File, >Save, or >File, Save As to name my new mpeg-2 video file?

Thanks for your patience, because you are so very correct in recognizing that I have been shooting myself in the foot over this "Save" verus "Save As" issue.

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

3(a) -- When you select 'Same as Project Settings', a little dialogue box comes up which will have 'File Name', and as I have said above, it will have Untitled next to it by default. You simply highlight 'Untitled' and type in your own name. THEN you hit Save. Rendering will start and when it finishes, your mpeg-2 will be in your working folder with the name you assigned to it.

3(b) -- this is already answered in 3(a). If you do as I suggest, the mpeg-2 will have its own name before rendering starts and will retain it. Once rendering is complete, the mpeg-2 is ipso facto complete and requires no further saving.

3(c) -- Using File > Save after rendering is complete, has NOTHING to do with the mpeg-2. It merely saves the project (VSP) one more time, just as happened in your step 2 above.

Using File > Save As after rendering is complete also has nothing to do with the mpeg-2. It merely saves your project (VSP) with a new name.

Implemented your suggestions regarding "Save" versus "Save As" Ken, and they worked perfectly. Thank you once again for your valued assistance.

I did notice a potential problem after editing my captured VHS video, creating my DVD-compliant mpeg-2 video file, >File, >New Project (to get an empty timeline), then >Share, >Create Disc, and then >"the little cog wheel" to insure "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" was ticked. In this same drop down window, I saw that within the "Project Settings" box, "Lower Field First" was indicated.

This concerns me because you have made it clear that changing fields during a project "is a major no no." Do I need to try to change this project setting to "Upper Field First" before proceeding with my Share workflow and DVD burn process?

No -- there is no need to change those settings, if the Do Not Convert box is ticked. This means what it says. Your mpeg-2 is already DVD compliant, and by having the box ticked, you are telling the program to leave the file alone and not convert it any further.

It would be a different matter if the box were not ticked. Then, VS would convert your new mpeg-2 file to the properties it shows as default in that box. And if it changed the Field Order, you would certainly see the unacceptable results in your burned DVD.

You can of course change the properties in that box to match exactly the properties of your mpeg-2 if it will make you feel better. But it will have absolutely no effect on the processing of your mpeg-2 if the the Do Not Convert box is ticked...
