VS9 SE: "Failed to open DVD. Report ID: 0x800408ff(2303

Post by Goji »

I Have VideoStudio9 SE, which I got in a bundle with my Samsung camera. Everytime I try to import from the DVD, I get this error message:

"Failed to open DVD. Report ID: 0x800408ff(2303)"

The progress bar will fill up about 5 bubbles instantaneously and pause for a few moments before this pops up. I've seen a fix for a similar problem on this board with MovieFactory, but the fix dosen't work for VideoStudio. Any help?

Does the camera's manual say anything about 'finishing' the disc before you try to import anything from it?

Could you also tell us exactly how you were trying to import?

And it would have been helpful if you had told us the fix in MF which did not work, to save people time in repeating it...

Yea, I have to finish the disc, and always do, the computer won't read it otherwise.

As for how I was trying to import, I load up VS9, go to VS Editor, Click the "capture" tab, then "Import from DVD/DVD-VR", after which I select the drive with the disc in it.

Here were the fixes I found for MF when I searched for that error code:

Have you tried copying the contents of the DVD to your hard drive, and then tried importing from there?

Or simply changing the extension of the .vob files to .mpg?

I have tried importing from my hard drive, but I can't copy all of the files on the dvd due to some sort of "redundancy".

Also, I can change them to MPGs, but in VS, they have video without sound. If I open them in Windows Movie Maker, they have sound but no video, it's all pretty strange.

The video-without-sound is no doubt due to the fact that your camera records the audio using Dolby AC-3. However, VS9 SE cannot handle Dolby. (The Dolby company requires a licence fee for each use of its codec. Software companies are understandably reluctant to pay a fee for a program which is going to be given away free.)

It does seem strange, though, that you got it with a camera which records with Dolby.

You can do a Google search for a free AC-3 filter which might at least allow you to import the audio, though you will find that it cannot then output with Dolby. In other words, you have to process the project using another audio format like LPCM or mpeg layer 2.

Or you can upgrade to a full version of VS which will process dolby. Version 11 has just been released, and the upgrade prices is US$59.95.
