Unable to Install PI 12 on laptop

Post by Ormond Williams »

Recently I purchased PI 12 after having the trial version on my laptop. I could not uninstall the trial version so I just deleted the folder it was in.

When I tried to install the paid version I got an error message that said "unhandled exception" and an error number with "Description: Object reference not set".

I looked this message up found a website that said I needed a new "Installshield engine". It gave instructions on how to determine the correct version and what to do. After following the instructions to the letter, the new Installshield engine will also not install and give the same unhandled exception error.

I have temporarily installed PI 12 on my home desktop computer and it works fine and I have started the beginners course at PIRC.

I'm guessing that this is a Win XP issue not a Ulead issue, but does anyone know if there is a way to fix this problem without a reformat and reinstall of Win XP?

Just deleting the installation folder was certainly not your best idea but let's see what we can do.

There is a way to remove all traces of the TBYB version you had installed. It involves tinkering with the WIN registry and is not for the faint hearted.

Firstly back up your registry and learn how to restore from a back up or be prepared to do a fresh install of XP in case something goes wrong. I never had to do that and, hence, can't be of particular help here. I would also only take this approach if something wasn't right with my system, like your case. What good would it do to restore a system that doesn't want to do what you want?

Here are the steps to remove all traces of PI from your registry:

To reinstall the program here are the steps that Ulead suggests:

1. Please launch Windows Explorer and go to Tools>Folder>Options and on the View tab check "show hidden files and folders".

2. Empty contents of your Temp folder under C:\Windows\Temp.

3. Uninstall Ulead PhotoImpact using the Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel.

3a. Goto C:/Document and settings/ and under each user listed look for a folder called Application data. Here you may find a Ulead Systems/PhotoImpact folder. If you do open it and delete the folder corresponding with the version you are trying to re-install.

4. Go to C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems then delete the PhotoImpact folder.

5. Go to Start > Run and type: "regedit" then click OK. This will open the Registry Editor program. Go to C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information and delete the following folders if they are present:
{FE58B892-3825-4610-A6A2-E6EFCA83BD97}

6. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Uninstall and delete the following folders if they are present:
{FE58B892-3825-4610-A6A2-E6EFCA83BD97}

7. Locate the identity enclosed in curly brackets that corresponds to Ulead PhotoImpact, delete the said entry.

8. Please delete all PhotoImpact folders on the ff: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ulead Systems\

9. Close regedit and restart your computer.

10. You can now proceed to reinstalling PhotoImpact. Be sure to logon as Administrator before installing your software to avoid restrictions.

Note: Before installing, please temporarily close other running programs or applications including antivirus, norton utilities, screensaver, other memory resident programs including Internet connection, etc. to avoid unnecessary conflict and restrictions within your system.

Good luck.

Heinz Oz ,
Thanks for your help!
I started to implement the steps and when I got to starting regedit, I could find no reference to C:\ so I was stumped.
I deleted everything from the windows/temp folder and checked for Ulead folders and deleted the one I found.
Thought to look in add/remove programs and there was an entry there from when I tried to install PI a couple of times unsuccessfully. Used uninstall on it and that worked. Then I was able to install PI successfully.
Hooray!!!
