playing non selected parts when multi-trimming

This is driving me nuts. I am trying to multi-trim a video but no matter what I do when I hit play it starts from the beginning. I need to be able to play from parts later in the film that i have not selected yet, in order to see if I am in the right spot.
How do you do this?
I remember in MF (4 I think) I could hold shift and play from anywhere while multi-trimming.

So for example lets suppose I have a 1 minute clip I wish to keep only in multiple places, say the first 15 seconds, and again from 30 to 45 seconds. I cannot for the life of me get it to play from the 30 second mark. If I hit play it starts from the begining (or previous selected point).
It seems too basic a concept for them to overlook so I am assuming it's just not mentioned in the manual.
