Crash even on backups

Post by mmponline »

I've created a project and then it started crashing on opening. I went back on the backups, but even they are corrupt up to a point. (Many hours of wor back)

1. What is the use of back-ups if it is corrupt as well?
2. Is there a way to determine the crashes or is it just bad luck (Bad program)? I use the latest MSP 8 with all SPs installed.
4. I tried to open the file on my laptop as well (No luck)
3. Is there any way to recover some of my work? Deadline!!!!!

It is clear that if you do something that corrupts a file but doesn't crash the app, the backups will also be corrupt. I had exactly the same problem with Word, the other day and apparently lost all record of a 190-page document I wrote. Fortunately, I was able to recover it by using an earlier version of Word, although the formatting went haywire.

Good working practice:
Once every 60-90 minutes, close the app. and reload it. This will check the integrity and, if anything goes wrong, you won't lose too much.

Recovery:
Sometimes, you can recover corrupt files by opening a new project, putting in a colour clip as a marker, and then Inserting your old clip after the clip, which you can then delete. No guarantee, though: it depends on the nature of the corruption.

Hi
I had a similar problem a while back on a major project and had to go right back to a much earlier backup to continue (oh, how I laughed!)

The lesson I learned was to make a separate copy of the retrieved project and called it a totally different name. Then I alternated my saves between the two copies so that if one crashed and was unretiveable, the other would work ok (which did happen again but that time I had a working separate backup).

Although it was obviously something unique to that project that caused the corruption as it hasn't happened again - touch wood, I follow my backup practice as a matter of course on any major project I'm working on (i.e. lots of tracks, clips and effects) as it just takes a second to save to alternate files but a couple of hours to retieve a totally corrupt project - if at all!
Thanks & regards.

Are you importing dvp s?

I had similar problems. I guessed that importing earlier editing as dvp's onto the timeline could be pushing my system too hard. I stopped importing dvp's and I have had no more crashes. But I was unable to recover the lost work.
