Unable to capture

Post by l2chil »

I downloaded the VS11 plus. I tried to capture from my canon HV 20 via my laptops 1394 FireWire. I get the message "unable to switch to capture mode check if your video card is working. I have used this method with adobe premiere element with no problem. What am I missing? Thanks ahead, John

I have the same exact problem - Canon HV20, firewire, running vista ultimate 64 bit.

BTW: By experimenting, I noticed that if you switch the HV20 to 480 line output, DV mode (instead of HDV), the latest windows video import utility will download the video.

VS11 appears to work fine with the resulting video. Thats good enough for my use right this moment and VS11 is the only editing program that has worked to any degree with Vista 64 bit.

Hopefully, ULEAD will develop a patch for this issue.

Representatives from Ulead infrequently (if at all) visit this board. If you have an issue that needs their attention you need to submit a Tech Support Form.

I already compiled reports about this issue.

As we all know, Ulead releases VideoStudio 10 Plus Canon HV10 Support Pack, so its more likely (hopefully) that they will release a patch to support Canon HV 20.

Thanks legalguy,
I tried what you suggested this am and no luck. I am using XP SP2. I may have tried it to many time as now the program closes after trying to capture. It does come up with canon HDV and the viewing screen / vcr buttons will operate the camera but thats it. I may try and reload the program and try again. I guess there is an upside to Vista. It is good to know that you have found a work around for Vista as I have a new system on order and it will have Vista premium installed.

As this thread states, the HV10 patch also works on the HV20. Whether the patch can be use on v11 is another story.

I would have thought that patch would have been worked into VS11...

Ok guys I am able to capture. I loaded an updated version of direct x and used legalguys changes to the camera. I will try without those changes to see if it works. Now I need a manual for vs 11 and the Ulead site does not seem to be working. Thanks again.

Any resolution?

Post by fredb »

I have the same exact problem under Vista 32 bit, VS11+ and Canon HV20 HDV camcorder.

I reported the problem to Ulead today and hope they can help us resolve this issue.

I have installed the same under XP (dual boot PC) and it works fine there. This iseems to be Vista related.

Nope - I have win xp sp2 and am having the same problem. I upgraded to studio 11 from studio 8. I have no problems capturing with studio 8 and using exact same set up, but cannot capture with 11. Using a Sharp mini DV camcorder with a Plextor Convertx. This is pretty inexcusable IMHO and I am really sorry I upgraded.................. :(

I am adding this post to bring this thread back to the front - there is another thread titled "unable to switch to capture mode" that involves the exact same problem

Problem Solved

Post by chousel9 »

Solution found thanks to a clue provided in this thread - you need to update directx with the "April 2007 Update"

Well installing the directX 9 April update may help under XP, but that is not an option for Vista.

I managed to make it work under Vista by re-installing VideoStudio 10. When both 10 and 11 are installed it works again (for me at least).

problem solvers

Post by chousel9 »

That's great you also found a solution - sorry - it didn't occur to me that a directx update wouldn't apply to Vista.

But what seems clear to me on these threads is that the problem is not with the operating system or the device used.

So you found a solution and I found a solution - meanwhile when tech support FINALLY got back to me they said there was NO solution - so sorry - VIDEO Studio just isn't compatible with my device and I would just have to use the software that was bundled with it to do the capturing. ROTFLMAO! The best part? ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO IS THE SOFTWARE THAT CAME BUNDLED WITH MY CAPTURE DEVICE!!!!

... and as I just said to another of your posts, that earlier version was specially tweaked by the hardware manufacturer to work with their hardware. Moreover, the hardware manufacturer -- and there are several of them who do this -- refuse to give the tweaking code to the software manufacturers for later versions of the software. They want to keep their hardware and associated software as proprietary as possible...
